663 stream, so also if it were incompatible with reference to the bank also, then it would further indicate the purpose. But the bank is not the primary meaning of the word 'gangā', nor is there any incompatibility, and there is no connection of the bank, which is the indicated sense of the word 'gangā', with the holiness, coolness, etc., which are to be further indicated. Nor is there any purpose with reference to the purpose which is supposed to be indicated. Besides, the word Gangā, unlike the word bank, is not unable to convey the purpose. The sampradāya-prakāśini observes : "(pp. 40, Edn. R. C. Dwivedi, ibid)” - tam eva hervabhāvam vitatya darśayati - 'laksyam na mukhyam’ity ādi. mukhyártha-sambandhaḥ prayojanam skhald-gatitvam ca iti iyati laksanāyām yā sāmagrī sā vākya-pañcakena paripāryā nirastā.
tad etad vyācaste-yathā gangā-sabda ity adinā. prayojane hi laksye tatasya mukhyárthavam bādhaś ca nyāyyaḥ na ca tad ubhayam api sambhavati. samāyábhāvāt na mukhyárthatā ghosádhikaranatya-sambhavān na bad gangā-sabdábhidheyatvena abhimatasya sroto-dharmaiḥ pāvanatvā”dibhir laksyasammatais sambandhaḥ. nā’pi prayojanántaram prayojanatvena sambhavati. nā’pi gangā-sabdasya taţa iva pāvanatv ādau skhald-gatitvam, svārtha-samavāyitvāt. ittham na laksaņāyāḥ śankánkurasyā’py avakāśaḥ. Mammața further observes : (K.P. II. 17 ab.) -
“evam apy anavasthā syād
yā mūla-ksaya-kāriņī.” evam api, prayojanam cel laksyatetat prayojanántareņa, tad api prayojanántarena, iti prakrtápratītikrd anavasthā bhavet.” The sampradāyaprakāśini on this 'has - (pp. 40, 41, ibid) : atha’pi ced abhyupagamyeta, tadā prathamalaksanāyā mūlocchedi durantam dosántaram āpated ity āha - 'evam api' iti. prakrtāpratītikrd iti mūlaksaye tyasya vivrtiḥ. prakstalaksaņāyā jñaptipratibandha-kāriny anavasthā prasajet. utpatti-jñaptyor anyatarapratibandhakatvábhāve hi na anavasthādoṣaḥ, yathā-bījānkurā”dau.”
Mammața thus argues that even in this way there would be ad infinitum which will strike at the very root.
“Even in this way", means if the purpose were to be indicated it would be indicated by another purpose, that too by yet another purpose, and thus would result a 'regressus ad infinitum', causing the non-apprehension of the matter in hand.
