SAHĶDAYĀLOKA Both the varieties of suggestion with un-intended literal import and resonancelike suggestion are suggested by individual words and by whole sentences." (Trans. K.Kris. pp. 107). Thus the 17 varieties of dhvani (= 2, laksaņāmülaka +1 rasā"didhvani +2 sabdaśaktimülaka +12 arthaśaktimülaka) are both pada-gata and vākya-gata. Thus in all 34 varieties are available. Though 'dhvani' has been defined as 'kāvya-višesa', it can also be said to be 'pada-prakāsya', because in the dhvani-kāvya which is of the form of a beautiful sentence, we can further distinguish the beauty of an individual pada or word also. In his vrtti on Dhv. III. 1. Ā. further observes to this effect :
“nanu kāvya-viseso dhvanir ity uktam, tat katham tasya pada-prakāśatā ? kävya-viśeso hi viśistártha-pratipatti-hetuh sabda-sandarbhaviśesah. tad bhāvas pada-prakāśatve na upapadyate. padānām smārakatvena a-vācakatvāt.
ucyate-syād eșa dosah yadi vācakatvam prayojakam dhvani-vyavahāre syāt. na tv evam; tasya vyañjakarvena vyavasthānāt. kiñ ca, kāvyānām śarīriņām iva samsthāna-viśesa-vacchinna-samudāya-sādhyā’pi cărutva-pratītir anvaya-vyatirekābhyām bhāgeșu kalpyata iti padānām api vyañjaka-mukhena vyavasthito dhvanivyavahāro na virodhi.
anistasya śrutir yad vad āpādayati duşțatām, śruti-dustā"dişu vyaktam tad-vad ista-śrutir guņam. padānām smārakatvépi pada-mātrávabhāsinaḥ, tena dhvaneh prabhedeșu sarveșy eva asti ramyatā. vicchitti-sobhinaikena bhūsaņena iva kāmini pada-dyotyena sukaver dhvaninā bhāti bhārati.
