________________ 750 SAHRDAYĀLOKA Anandavardhana took 'guņas' or excellences as qualities of rasa; Mukula keeps quiet over this as he discusses only abhidhā in his work. Anandavardhana, over and above abhidhā accepts ‘guņa-vștti' and vyañjanā as word-powers; Mukula on the other hand accepts only abhidhā which is broad enough to cover laksanā also in its fold, while vyañjanā for him does not exist at all. Even laksaņā is an extension of abhidhā and it has no independent existence. While for the Mimāmsakas 'gunavrtti' and laksana were not identical, for Anandavardhana they are identical. Mukula also places both gunavrtti and laksaņā under a single title i.e. laksanā, which again is not independent of abhidhā, of which these two are subvarieties. Mammata had to face this music of Mukula also and also of Mukula's pupil, Pratīhārendurāja. He also has no faith in vyañjanā and passes a remark, following his teacher Mukula, (pp. 100, N.S. Edn. 1928) · "evam etad vyañjakatvam paryāyoktā”dişv antar bhāvitam. etac ceha bahuvaktavyattvān na vaitatyena prapancitam. kuśágrīya-buddhinam hi dinmātra eva upadiśyate sati buddhi-valli am āsādayati.” On pp. 58, (under ‘rasavat', in varga IV) he observes : “rasānām bhāvānām ca kāvya-sobhátiśayahetutvāt kim kāvyálamkāratvam uta kävya-jīvitatvam iti na tāvad vicāryate grantha-gauravabhayāt. rasa-bhāva-svarūpam cátra na vivecitam a-prakstatvād bahu-vaktavyarvāc ca. He does not name vyañjanā and by avagamana-vyāpāra purhaps he wants to take anumiti or arthāpatti. So, 'paryāyokta' is defined by Udbhasa as : (pp. 60, ibid) - "paryāyoktam yad anyena prakāreņā”bhidhīyate, vācya-vācaka-vrttibhyam śūnyenā’vagamanātmanā.” Pratīhārendurāja here explains : vācakasya abhidhāyakasya sva-sabdasya vịttir vyāpāro vācyártha-pratyāyanam. vācyasya tu abhidheyasya vyāpāro vācyántareņa saha ākāńkṣā-sannidhi-yogyatāmāhātmyāt samsarga-gamanam. evamvidhaś ca yo vācya-vācakayor vyāpāras tam antareņa api prakārántareņa artha-sāmartyā”tmanā avagama-svabhāvena yad avagamyate tatparyāyeņa sva-kanthā'nabhihitam api sántareņa śabda-vyāpāreņa avagamyamānatvāt paryāyoktam vastu. tena ca sva-samślesa-vasena kāvyárthólamkriyate."
