________________ "Classification of Poetry (Criticism Oriented) 989 i.e. - “Merged in the other meaning" and "completely lost", these are the two kinds of the expressed in, “suggestion with un-intended literal import.” (Trans. K.Kris. pp. 39, ibid) (Dhv. II. 1) These two sub-varieties being laksanā-mülaka, i.e. based on indication, the mukhyártha-bādha or non-acceptance of the primary sense is established here as a precondition. So, where in the apprehension of the suggested sense, laksyártha is taken into account and vācyártha becomes un-intended, i.e. it is found to be absolutely incongrous with the context, or is not intended even if found congruous with the context and therefore merges into another sense, - at both these places avivakṣita-vācya-dhvani is said to be there. Locana (on Dhv. II. 1) explains these two sub-varieties as follows: (In the term “arthántarasamkramita) - "samkramitam iti ņicā, vyañjanā-vyāpāre yaḥ sahakārivargas tasya’yam prabhāva ity uktam, tiraskrta-śabdena ca. yena vācyena a-vivakṣitena satā avivaksitavācyo dhvanir vyapadiśyate tad vācyam dvidhā iti sambandhah. yórthah upapadyamānópi tāvatā eva anupayogāt dharmántara-samvalanayā'nyatām iva gato laksyamāņó nugatadharmi sūtra-nyāyena aste, sa rūpåntara-pariņata uktaḥ. yas tvanupapadyamāna upāyatāmātreņa arthántara-pratipattim krtvā. palāyata iva, sa tirskrta iti. nanu vyangyā”tmano yadā dhvaner bhedo nirūpyate, tadā vācyasya 'dvidhā' iti bhedakathanam na sangatam ity āśankya āha - "tathāvidhābhyām ca” iti. caḥ yasmād arthe. vyañjaka-vaicitryād hi yuktam vyangya-vaicitryam iti bhāvaḥ vyañjake tvarthe yadi dhvani-sabdas tadā na kaścid dosa iti - bhāvaḥ. In the term, "arthántara-samkramita”, ‘ņic' affix is seen in “samkramita”. (This means it is not in the sense of “śuddha-kriyā-samkrānta") It is here in the sense of “prerana". The idea is that meaning owing to its own speciality does not proceed or pass (samkrānta) of its own, by being a companion or associate of vyañjanā-function or suggestivity it passes into the suggested se -function or suggestivity it passes into the suggested sense with the help of suggestive power. The - kta-suffix in "tiraskrta" also carries the same meaning. Thus the factors that associate with the suggester (or vyañjaka) become the cause in completely discarding the primary or conventional sense. The original kārikā has to be understood as follows : That vācya or primary sense, when it becomes un-intended, dhvani is also said to be a-vivaksita-vācya, and this un-inteded vācya is two-fold - (i) one, where the meaning is not in Jain Education International For Personal & Private Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
