Thus following the explanation of the Loçanakāra, i.e. Abhinavagupta, Ā. has enumerated 35 basic varieties of dhvani. Taking into consideration samkara i.e. intermingling and samsrsti i.e. collocation etc. the total will tend to grow in a manifold way. We will go to see later how Mammața and Viśvanātha enumerate these varieties.
For the present we may again note the fact that (i) laksaņāmūla and (ii) abhidhāmüla are two basic varieties of dhvani and A. has given two basic subdivisions of these two. Thus Dhv. II. 1 explains :
"evam avivaksitavācya-vivakṣitánya-paravācyatvena dhvanir dvi-prakārah prakāśitaḥ. tatra a-vivaksita-vācyasya prabheda-pratipādanāya idam ucyate -
arthántare samkramitam atyantam vā tiraskrtam, a-vivaksita-vācyasya
dhvaner vācyam dvidha matam. (Dhv. II. 1) "So far, two varieties of suggestion, viz. "that with un-intended literal import", and "that with intended but further-extending literal import" have been mentioned. Now the sub-varieties of the first are set forth in what follows :" (Trans. K. Kris.)
