SAHRDAYĀLOKA Śāradātanaya who places it in anustubh verses. For him, as in Bhāņa, so also in Bhānikā, lāsyangas are presented. For Bhoja nartanaka is four-fold such as samyā. lāsya, chalika and dvipadī. Bhoja, while discussing sabdálamkāras mentions six-fold preksyálamkāra such as tāndava, lāsya, chalika, sampā (i.e. samyā), hallīsaka and rāsa.
Bhoja has 'preksaņa' also, which is missing in the A.bh. and H. Śārdātanaya presents it in a clumsy way. Nātya-rāsaka is not read in H., but is seen in Bhoja, Rāmacandra and Sāradātanaya. Thus, so far as uparūpakas are concerned H. mainly accepts the lead of Abh. and then of Bhoja.
H.'s pupils, Ramacandra and guņacandra, the joint authors of the Nātyadarpaņa (ND.) however, though perfectly aquainted with the A.bh. and H., choose to follow the lead of Bhoja while treating the uparūpakas, the definitions of which are from the śr. Pra. On rūpakas the authors seem to side with Bharata, Abh. and therefore also with H. they accept twelve varieties of rūpaka including the ten major rūpakas added by nātikā, which is accepted by Bharata and also prakaranī. About Sattaka they suggest that Kohala and others have treated the same. The definitions of samyā, lāsya and chalita are accepted in the ND. from Bhoja's definitions as cited in his S.K.Ā. and Sr. Pra, in the alamkāra section.
Sāradātanaya in his B.P. deals with the topic of upa-rupakas in a very elaborate fashion. He accepts ideas, or even definitions or part of the same, from Abhinavagupta, Dhananjaya, Bhoja and also from a source not identified by scholars as yet. As stated earlier, we take Sāgarnandin (NLRK.) as the successor and not the predecessor of Sāradātanaya. Viśvanātha, of course, is the last to join this list of honourable writers on uparūpakas.
In the beginning of VIIIth chapter which deals with the ten major types of drama, he observes that these ten alone are rasā"tmaka. This view is in harmony with the observations of Bharata, Abhinavagupta, Dhanañjaya, Bhoja and Hemacandra. In fact nobody has a voice against this. The bhāva-pradhāna varieties are the twenty uparūpakas that he mentions including in them toțaka, nātikā and sattaka which other authorities put with major rūpakas. Sāradātanaya observes in his B.P. VIII 1-3 :
kathāśarīram kavyasya lakṣaṇam cópapāditam, bharatā”dibhir ācāryaiḥ darsitenaiva vartmanā. prāthamyān nāțakasyásya tat samyag abhidhīyate. nāțakam sa-prakaranam bhāṇaḥ prahasanam dimaḥ,
