ચરિત્ર ગ્રંથ “......... That the true biographer is like a Kodak. His business is to record facts and statements as they are, not as they might have been. Biographical writing may be likened to a faithful protrait painting. The biographer should present his subjects not as demi-Gods or super-men but as the human beings they are. When Velasquez-the Spanish master-artist painted King Philip the Fourth, he drew him just as he was ; fat, ugly and repulsive. Velasquez's work was entirely objective, and so should be every biographer's.
[ Mr. Philip Guedalla. ] (Modern Review, April 1934, p. 386). ગુજરાતી સાહિત્યમાં ચરિત્રગ્રંથ અલ્પ પ્રમાણમાં છે. ગુજરાતી સાહિત્યનું એ અંગ વાસ્તવિક રીતે હજુ વિકસ્યું જ નથી. જે કાંઈ પુસ્તક છે તે બહુધા અંગ્રેજી, મરાઠી કે બંગાળીના અનુવાદો છે; સ્વતંત્ર કૃતિઓ અને તે માલિક તે ગણીગાંઠી છે જેવી કે, મહીપતરામ કૃત કરસનદાસ મૂળજીનું ચરિત્ર, ગોવર્ધનરામ લિખિત નવલરામ ચરિત્ર, કાન્તિલાલ રચિત ગોવર્ધનરામનું ચરિત્ર, વિનાયકકૃત નંદશંકર ચરિત્ર, ભાનુસુખરામ કૃત મહીપતરામ અને ગત વર્ષમાં (સન ૧૯૩૩) પ્રસિદ્ધ થયેલાં બે પુસ્તકે વીર નર્મદ અને કવીશ્વર દલપતરામ.
એક સમયે જાણીતી હિન્દના હાકેમ (Rulers of India Series) નામે ગ્રંથમાળા ગુજરાતીમાં ઉતારવા સોસાઈટી અને ગુજરાતી પ્રેસ એ બે સંસ્થાઓ તરફથી પ્રયાસ કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા અને દરેકે એ ગ્રંથમાળાના ત્રણ ચાર પુસ્તકો લખાવીને પ્રસિદ્ધ કર્યા હતાં. પણ તે આખી ગ્રંથમાળા કેઈ કારણસર બેમાંથી એક પૂરી કરી શકવું નહોતું; કદાચ કોપીરાઈટને પ્રશ્ન એમની આડે આવ્યો હોય !
