in the province, being founded by the late Mr. A. K. Forbes in 1848 and is registered under Act XXI of 1860 ( Societies Registration Act ).
The Society's offices are situate in the Karanj, just opposite the Collector's office. It has its own building and the upper portion of it, which is named the Premabhai Hall is used for public purposes. In fact it is the Town Hall of the City.
The present building of the Society was built in 1901, its foundation Ceremony being performed by the then Commissioner Sir F. S. P. Lely. Since then the work of the Society has vastly inereased and the upper storey the Premabhai Hall is also found to be small and incommodious.
It has become necessary to extend the buildings and the Public Hall on the upper storey so as to meet the increasing requirements of the Society as well as the general public. Such extention is only possible by having vacant municipal plot as well as the adjoining three houses on the South-West Corner bearing Municipal Census Nos. 4319-20, 4321-22 and 4323 and city survey & Sheet No. 3,119, 120, 121. It is therefore proposed that the same should be acquired.
The Society being a body registered under Act XX1 of 1860 is a company within the meaning of the Land Acquisition Act and the aims and the objects of the Society as also the work it carries on will show that the object of the extension of the buildings is for public purposes within the meaning
