At the request of the Managing Committee of the Gujarat Vernacular Society have the honour to place the following before you for favourable consideration by the Government.
1. The Gujarat Vernacular Society was started by the late Hon. Mr. A. K. Forbes, the then Asstt. Judge at Ahmedabad, on 25th Dec. 1848, with the object of promoting the vernacular literature of Gujarat and spreading useful knowledge through the Vernacular. In this he was joined by many European and Indian Officials of the time and the institution was rendered assistance by Indian Chiefs and gentry.
2. The Society started work by patronising authors and purchasing copies of their works. It also started a collection of old manuscripts of Vernacular literature.
3. The Society opened a public library in 1849 and as necessity for a separate suitable building was felt, Government were approached for a site, which they granted gratis in about 1854-55. The then Nagarseth Himabhai gave a donation of Rs. 4500/for a building and with the help of other donations
