સાહિત્યની અભિવૃદ્ધિ “ Written words contain all the letters and are used by all the writers; and in this general sense literature is the whole mind-life of the successive generations of men, most energetic, perhaps, when it springs from ideas bandied to and fro among contemporeries, but in the retrospect presenting peaks which dominate the whole vista down the life of the ages, high enough to be always visible, powerful enough to be always impressive. There is no kind of mental energy which it includes. It is science and it is art. It is learning and poetry. It is religion, philosophy, history, politics, morality, physics, and all the written arts. It is mankind conscious of itsalf in every way-" the whole of man's intellectual life"-and we cannot think away one of the party without altering the whole."

Scott-James b.331, સોસાઈટી જેવી સાહિત્ય સંસ્થાઓ જે મુખ્યત્વે ભાષા સાહિત્યની અભિવૃદ્ધિ, વિકાસ અને પ્રચાર અર્થે સ્થપાયેલી છે તે જેને આપણે જ્ઞાન પ્રબોધક સાહિત્ય (Knowledge of information) કહીશું તે પ્રકારનું સાહિત્ય સામાન્ય રીતે પ્રસિદ્ધ કરે છે, તેમ કેશ, વ્યાકરણ, સાહિત્યનો ઈતિહાસ, પ્રાચીન કાવ્ય સંશાધન પુસ્તકે, જેના પ્રકાશનમાંથી કોઈ પણ પ્રાપ્તિની આશા ન સંભવે એ નિમિત્ત એ રકમ ખર્ચ ખાતે માંડી વાળવાની હોય, પણ અભ્યાસ માટે તે પુસ્તકો આવશ્યક સમજી એ કાર્ય ઉપાડી લેવાય છે; અને તેમાં જ એનાં અસ્તિત્વની ઉપયોગિતા અને સાર્થકતા સમાયેલાં છે.
