It will be seen from the above para that the Government has from the very beginning insisted on the collection and preservation of all books published in the country.
Of these publications, I understand only a few selected books are supplied to the library of India office; the rest are stocked here; but these · books are not properly catalogued and are also not easily accessible to scholars.
The development and growth of Vernacular literature is making rapid progress and students are keenly feeling the absence of a good, properly equipped anà complete library.
To overcome this difficuity Literary Conferences all over the country are appealing to Government to make suitable arrangements to supply books in the language of their Province to Public Institutions, with proper safegurds, to enable them to complete, as far as possible, their collection of books in their own Vernaculars.
There is a movement at present afoot, to supply copies of books received under the Registration Act by Government to the Imperial Library at Calcutta.
From above it will be perceived that the Society's request for supply of Gujarati books to its library for collection and preservation is legitimate and just; and I trust, it will receive support from you.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
SdJ. V. Ramanbhai.
Hon Secretary.
