________________ 34 THE SACRED BOOKS OF THE JAINAS. The accompanying table (Chart No. II.) illustrates these fourteen varieties of Jivas. It will be remembered that in Verse 11 it was told that Jivas are first of all divided into two varieties Samsuri and Mukta. The Samsari Jivas are subdivided into Trasa and Sthâvara. The Sthâvara Jivas possessed of one sense are again divided into Bâdara (gross) and Sukṣma (subtle). A Bâdara form is that which is fettered by matter. A Sukṣma form is not so fettered. That is to say, a Sukşma is a subtle form unfettered by material things, earth, etc., while Bâdara is exactly its opposite. In Jaina philosophy it is said that all the universe is the place of existence of Suksma Jivas possessing one sense. It is also said that Bâdara Jivas possessing one sense must have some Âdhâra (substratum) in order to exist. Jivas of five senses may be either with mind or without mind. Those with mind are also known as Sanji, or having Sanja. Sanjâ consists of attempt to gain what is beneficial and leave what is harmful and a judgment of good and bad.† Paryâpti has been thus illustrated in Gommata-sâra: “AE gomigowiż figazazunkari zarė | ag gfruger far qmfager gùvar ı” [Jiva-kânda. Verse 118.] i.e." As things like rooms, jars, cloths, etc., are full or empty, so Jivas should be understood to be complete or incomplete (Paryâpta and Aparyâpta)." Ahâra (taking food and drink), Sarira (Body), Indriya (the five senses) Ânaprana (Respiration), Bhâşâ (Speech) and Manas (Mind), these six exist in Jivas and make them complete (Paryâpta). Of these the first four make Jivas having one sense complete, and the first five make Jivas having two, three and four senses complete. As for Jivas having five senses, all the six are necessary to make them complete.+ In absence of these the Jivas are incomplete (Aparyâpta). * "संशिनः समनस्काः ।" [Tattvārthādhigama Sotra II. 5. 24.] + “हिताहितप्राप्तिपरिहारयेोगु देोषविचारणात्मिका संज्ञा " । raja-vârttika on Satra II. 5, 24]. + "आहारसरीरिंदियपजत्ती प्राणपाणभासमा । aaık da gf a q¿ftafaasecotu' 11” [Tattvartha [ गोम्मटसार:, जीमकाण्ड: ११९]
