and the commentator actually does so and comments on it as well. Even such portions as are suggested by java' are mostly recorded in the third Appendix. But those which are inadvertently left out in the third Appendix are included in the fourth one.
The fourth Appendix is specially meant for recording the portions that are suggested by java'. Therein in the beginning all the places where 'java' occurs are indicated with page Nos. and line Nos. This is followed by the information as to where the portions suggested by 'java' are to be searched. Sometimes the portion suggested by 'java' is totally the same as is found in another scriptural work from where we are required to supply in the context, sometimes we are required to change the case-terminations while supplying the portion from another scriptural work, sometimes we are required to supply that much part only of the intervening portion which is useful in the context. Generally we are required to supply from another scriptural work the portion intervening between two words preceding and succeeding 'java' word, yet at times we are required to supply from another scriptural work some portion followed by the word preceding 'java'. As for example, on p. 25 line 7 there occurs 'subheṇam pariņāmeņam jāva', here we are required to supply from another scriptural work even the portion followed by a word or words preceding java- that is, even the portion followed by 'subhena pariņāmeņa'-, thus we are required to supply 'lessähim visujjhamāṇīhim ajjhavasāṇenam sohanenam' (p. 63 line 18). Sometimes we are required to supply from another scriptural work even the portion which follows the word succeeding java'. As for example, there occurs on p. 198 line 10 'uvviggă vā jāva ussuyā và', here we are required to supply from the foregoing textual portion (p. 198 line 2) 'uppuyā vā' which follows 'ussuyā va'. Thus the portion which the java' word suggests us to supply is sometimes determined by our discretionary faculty according to the demand of the context. As the first Śrutaskandha contains illustrations, the point illustrated should be made clear. Sometimes it is shown in the original text itself but invariably in the commentary at the end of each chapter it is shown in the gathās embodying the application of the illustration to the point illustrated. These gathās are taken from some other source. All these gāthās are collected in the fifth Appendix.
The sixth Appendix contains corrections etc.
Recensions: There existed two recensions of the Jñatadharmakathāextensive and more extensive. Ac. Shri Abhayadevasuri follows the more extensive one. This has been explicitly stated by him in his commentary (see p. 3 fn. 1, p. 10 fn. 2, p. 15 fn. 4). The extant manuscripts are seen to follow this recension. But the variants yielded by the other recension are noted in the commentary at various places. Even we have recorded them in foot-notes.
