16. KAŞAYAPAHUDA OF GUNADHARA
- Prof. Shubhachandra, Mysore
Acārya Gunadhara's name appears in the first place among the Śrutadhara ācāryas. Both Guṇadhara and Dharasena are known to be the establishers of Digambara Jain Canon. It is said that Gunadhara was more knowledgeable compared to Dharasēna.' Guṇadhara had aquired, from the tradition, the tradition, the knowledge of Pejja-dosa-pāhuḍas not only the knowledge of Pejjadosa-pāhuṇa, Gunadhara had, but also he had the knowledge of Maha-Kamma-Payadi. Justification to this is available in Kaśāyapāhuḍā. Separate chapters are available for Bandha, Sankramaṇa, udaya and udīraṇa in Kaśāya-pāhuḍa. These chapters are related to 6th, 12th and 10th chapters of 24 anuyoga-dvāras of mahā-kamma-payani pahuna respectively. One anuyogadvāra called alpa-bahutva of mahā-kamma-payaņi is spread in all over adhikāra chapter of Kaṣāya-pāhuḍa. That means, Guṇadhara was the knower of mahā-kamma-payāṇi and pejja-dosa-pāhuḍa. But by the study of Dhavala, the commentary on saṭkhanḍāgama we do not come to know that Dharasēna had the knowledge of pejja-dosa-pāhuḍa. Therefore Gunadhara is considered as the first ācārya who reduced the agama in the written form in the Digambara Tradition.
Dharasena-acarya did not write any book. But Guṇadhara-ācārya has written Kaṣāya-pāhuḍa.

We come to know from the invocatory verse of Jaya-dhavala that Gunadhara has explained the work Kaṣāya-pāhuḍa through gathās. जेणिह कसायपाहुडमणेयणज्जमुज्जलं अणंतत्थं । गाहाहि विवरिय तं गुणहर भडारयं वंदे ॥६॥
After this invocation, Vīrasēna writes like this: Gunadhara-pāhuṇa which is the third of the 20 pāhuḍās which is the 10th of the 12 vastu adhikāras of Jñāna-pravāda which is the fifth of the 14 Pūrvās.
