प्रसिद्ध वैयाकरण हेमचन्द्र के अनुसार 'प्रकृति' (= संस्कृत) से प्राकृत शब्द की निष्पत्ति मानी गई है । 'प्रकृतिः संस्कृतम् । तत्र भवं तत आगतं वा प्राकृतम् ।' अर्थात् जिसकी उत्पत्ति संस्कृत में हुई हो अथवा संस्कृत से निकलकर जो अलग निर्मित हो वही प्राकृत है ।
कुछ भाषा-शास्त्री 'प्रकृत्या ( स्वभावेन ) सिद्धं प्राकृतम्' इस व्युत्पत्ति के अनुसार स्वभावसिद्ध को ही 'प्राकृत' मानते हैं।

The word Prakrit is derived from a which according to the auther, means Sanskrit. Hemachandra classifies Prakrit words into तद्भव, तत्सम, and देशी . He does not treat of here as he has already done so in the preceding chapters. He does not speak of देशी words here but discusses only तद्भव words of both types, सिद्ध and साध्यमान ।
