A NOTE ON JAINA AGAMAS
13
The scholars are acquainted with 84 names of the Agamas, mentioned in the Nandisūtra and the Paksikasūtra, as also with the names of the Āgamas, prevalent to-day. So, I refrain from enumerating them and simply relate the important points. An Anga work known by the name of Praśnavyäkaranasūtra at present is not original but some newly composed Sūtra occupying the place of the original one. This is gathered from the introductory note on the Āgamas, occurring in the Nandisūtra and the Samavāyanga. Ac. Municandrasūri in his Vrtti on the Devendra-Narakendra Prakarana uses the name 'Rajaprasenajit for the Rajapraśniyasūtra so that it can well correspond to the Prakrit name 'Rāyappasenaiyam' mentioned in the Nandisūtra and the Pāksikasutra. In the Rajapraśniya there occurs a life-sketch of the King Pradesi. While reading this Agama, we are reminded of the Buddhist work named Petavatthu.
Prakirnaka : Generally it is maintained that there are ten Prakīrņakas. But there being no fixed established list of their names, their names are enumerated in various ways. If all the names are collected from these various enumerations, their total number comes to 22. They are as follows: 1 Causarana, 2 Aurapaccakkhāna, 3 Bhattaparinnā, 4 Samthāraya, 5 Tamdulaveyāliya, 6 Camdavejjhaya, 7 Deviņdatthaya, 8 Ganivijja, 9 Mahāpaccakkhāna, 10 Viratthaya, 11 Isibhāsiyāim, 12 Ajīvakappa, 13 Gacchāyāra, 14 Maranasamadhi, 15 Titthogāli, 16 Ārähanapadāgā, 17 Divasagarapannatti, 18 Joisakaramdaya, 19 Amgavijja, 20 Siddhapāhuda, 21 Sārāvali, 22 Jivavibhatti. Of these 22 names, the Nandisūtra and the Paksikasūtra mention nine names only, seven in the utkalika division-viz. Deviņdatthaya, Tamdulaveyāliya, Camdāvejjhaya, Ganivijjā, Maranavibhatti-Maranasamāhi, Āurapaccakkhāna, Mahāpaccakkhāna—and two in the kālika division-viz Isibhāsiyāim, Divasagarapannatti. Yet leaving aside Causarana, the extant Āurapaccakkhāna, Bhattaparinnā, Samthāraya and Ārähanapaļāgā, the remaining Prakīrnakas mentioned in the Cūrnis are very old. Tamdulaveyāliya is referred to in Sthavira Agastyasimha's Cūrni (p. 3 line 12) on the Dasaveyaliyasūtra.
We know that the name 'Kammapagadisamgahani' is used for the Karmaprakrti work; similarly, the use of the name 'Dīvasāgarapannattisamgahani' is possible for the Divasāgarapannatti work.
The Svetāmbara Mūrtipūjaka Sect includes the Titthogäli in the group of Prakirnakas, but it contains many such tenets or statements as would never be acceptable to the Śvetāmbaras; moreover, the chronological order of the extinction of the Āgamas, given in it, is not tenable.
