mapratyakhyāna'. The tract in which all this is dealt with is Aturapratyākhyāna'.
This tract is composed in prose and verse. Gāthās 1-5 contain a salutation to five great personages, viz. Arihanta, etc. and a solem declaration to renounce all sinful acts. Gāthās 6-9 comprise a prayer seeking forgiveness, addressed to all living beings among whom Arihanta is the foremost. Sūtra 10th contains the declaration to renounce eighteen vices (pāpasthānakas). Sūtras 11-12 contain a solemn declaration to renounce attachment to body, etc. Găthās 13-27 describe sägāra and nirāgāra renunciation and narrate how one prays all living beings to grant him forgiveness. At the end in gāthäs 28-30 there occurs an exhortation to the soul.
7. Mahāpaccakkānapainnayan: This Prakīrņaka variously describes the bhavacarimapratyākhyāna'. It is referred to in the Nandisūtra and the Pāksikasūtra. The Nandisūtracūrni, Haribhadrasūri's Nandisūtravrtti and the Pākṣikasūtravrtti describe it as follows: mahāpratyākhyānam, mahac ca tat pratyākhyānam ceti samasahesittha bhavattho (the quotation upto this is from the Nandisūtravṛtti and the Pakșikasūtravịtti) therakappena jinakappena va viharettă amte therakappiya bārasa vase saṁleham karettā, jinakappiya puna vihāreneva samlidhā tahā vijahājuttam samleham karettä nivvaghātam sacetthă ceva bhavacarimam paccakkhaṁti, eyam savittharaṁ jattha'jjhayane vannijjai tamajjhayanan Mahapaccakkhānam --Nandisutracūrni p. 58, Nandisūtravștti p. 72 and Pāksikasūtravṛtti folio 65.
This tract consists of 142 gathās. A list of the topics treated of in the tract is as follows: solemn declaration of the renunciation of bad conduct (gā. 3-5), prayer to all living beings for forgiveness, selfdenunciation, confession (gā. 6-8), cutting of the bonds of attachment, nature of the spiritual duty, denunciation of the lapses in the observance of primary and secondary restraints (gā. 9-12), reflection on the absolute aloneness of each individual as he moves through the cycle of rebirth (gā. 13-16), abandonment of the relation of attachment (samyoga) (gā. 17), the giving up of wrong attitude or wrong faith, confession of the faults unknowingly committed, abandonment of deceit, nature of confesser and his tendency to proceed on the path of emancipation (gā. 18-23), pulling out the Thorn pricking the soul, fruit of confession (gā. 24-30), performance of atonements, the abstaining from killing etc., abandonment of food etc., nature of externally and internally pure renunciation (gā. 31-36), sermon on aversion to worldly pleasure (gä. 37-40), description of
