INTRODUCTION
Vajjiyaputta Adhyayana, I have accepted the reading 'bie saṁjujjamāṇammi' (p. 182), whereas in Dr. Schubring's edition the reading 'bie samvujjhamāṇammi' has been accepted in the body of the text. Of course, both these readings are available in different old manuscripts. According to the reading accepted by me, the meaning is "if a seed is properly placed, that is, sown in such a way as it would be protected from all calamities in every way. (In the conditions for the protection and growth of a seed is necessarily included watering also.)" According to the reading accepted by Dr. Schubring, the meaning is "if a seed is watered well, it will be transformed into a sprout". Though a seed is watered well, it will not grow into a sprout if it is not well concealed, because then birds will carry it away or it will have to face some other calamities. But if it is sown in such a way as it would be protected in every way from all these calamities, it will surely grow into a sprout. Good protection of a seed includes all the conditions, viz. watering etc. conducive to the sprouting. Following this meaning I have accepted the reading 'samjujjamāņammi'. Pt. Manoharamuniji accepts the reading accepted by Dr. Schubring. But the three manuscripts utilised by him yield samjujjamāņṇammi, sūjujjamāṇammi and samjujjhamāņammi. Of them, the manuscript belonging to c. 1413 V.S. yields the reading samjujjamāṇammi. See the middle of the tenth line of the photograph of the first folio, printed in the edition. The other manuscript belonging to c. 1345 V.S. yields the reading sūjujjamāņammi. In this reading the syllable has been wrongly written in place of the syllable, that is, here also the reading jujjamāņammi is clearly available. A photograph of the first folio of this manuscript is also printed in the edition. The third manuscript yields the reading samjujjhamāṇammi. Here also the copyist has wrongly written in place of ज्ज. In short, the reading 'samjujjamāņammi' accepted by me is yielded by all the four old manuscripts which I have consulted. That is, I have not come across in any manuscript the reading accepted by Dr. Schubring and Pt. Manoharamuniji. The numerical figures showing the year of V.S., given in the captions of the photographs of the two manuscripts are baseless and imaginary. One may infer the Century or the first/second half of the Century, but one cannot infer the exact year of the Vikrama Era. The manuscript which he has assigned to 1345 V.S. is in no way earlier than the 15th Century V.S., this we can say on the basis of the characteristics of the script.
In this edition of ours, the second half of the 24th gatha (p. 203) of the 15th Adhyayana named Madhurayaṇijja contains the reading 'migārī ū saram pappa saruppattim vimaggati'. All the old manuscripts yield it. Hence Dr. Schubring too accepts it. But in the
