INTRODUCTION
"catuścatvāriṁśat 'isibhasiya' tti rṣibhāṣitādhyayanāni kalikaśrutaviseṣabhūtāni, 'diyalogacuyabhāsiya' tti devalokacyutaiḥ ṛṣibhūtair ābhāṣitāni devalokacyutabhāṣitāni | kvacit pathaḥdevaloyacuyanam isinam coyalisam isibhāsiya'jjhayana pannatta |" (Samavāyāngasūtra with Vṛtti, published by the Agamodaya Samiti, Surat, folio 68).
In these quotations it is stated that the Rṣibhāṣitasutra consists of 44 adhyayanas, whereas all the extant manuscripts, old and new, contain 45 adhyayanas. The Pākṣikasūtra mentions the Ṛsibhāṣita among kalika sutras and in the Vṛtti on this portion of the Pākṣikasūtra it is stated that the Ṛsibhāṣita consists of 45 adhyayanas. The text of the Vṛtti is as follows: isibhāsiyāim ti iha rṣayaḥ pratyekabuddhasādhavaḥ, te cătra Neminathatirthavartino Nāradadayo vimśatiḥ, Pārsvanathatīrthavartinaḥ pañcadasa, Varddhamanasvamitirthavartino dasa grāhyāḥ, tair bhāṣitāni pañcacatvāriṁsatsaṁkhyāny adhyayanāni śravaṇādyadhikāravanti rṣibhāṣitāni (See Pākṣikasūtravṛtti, folio 67). The Pākṣikasūtravṛtti is composed in 1180 V.S. This means that the manuscripts of the Isibhāsiyāim which existed in the 12th Century V.S. contained 45 adhyayanas. But it is noteworthy that Yaśodevasūri, the author of the Pakṣikasūtravṛtti, has not taken any note of the mention of 44 adhyayanas in the Samavāyāngasūtra as also in the Abhayadevasuri's Vṛtti thereon. And it is equally noteworthy that Abhayadevasuri who flourished in the 12th Century V.S. has said nothing about the manuscripts which contained 45 adhyayanas and were available in his times.
Regarding the first Naradiya Adhyayana of the Rṣibhāṣitasūtra, the Pākṣikasūtravṛtti refers to and records an old tradition (Vṛddhasampradaya1). Then it advises us to understand the
