26. SHRI SHANKHALAPUR TIRTHA (SHRI SHANTINATH BHAGAVAN)
In the village Shankhalapur situated at a distance of one mile from the Becharaji station, there is a vast temple with an underground cellar. Here is installed a very impressive idol of MULANAYAKA Shri Shantinath Bhagavan. Idols are installed here also in the original inner apartment, underground cellar and the 25 porticos of the BHAMATI. King Laxman raised this village and it was named Salakhanapur after his name; later on it became Shankhalpur. There was a big population of Shravakas here in this village and the Jainas were very rich and prosperous. In V.S. 1687 the poet Shri Gunavijayaji composed "Kocharavyavahari Rasa." It tells us that Shreshthi Kochara heared a lecture of Shri Sumatisadhu Suri (V.S. 1494-1551). In his sermonizing, Suriji talked about non-violence. Kochara Shreshthi referrred to violence taking place in Bahucharaji. Guruji asked Sajanasimha, made use of his influence and received orders from the Sultan and made Kochara an officer in command of 12 towns and villages. On getting the command, he proclaimed non-violence, and, as a consequence, killing of animals stopped in villages and towns like Bahucharaji. In the 14th century, Pethadakumar, a minister from Mandavagadh, constructed a Jina temple here. Jina idols excavated from underground are an ample evidence of ancient temples. A new temple was constructed in V.S. 1876 and the ceremonious installation took place in V.S. 1905.
૨૬. શ્રી શંખલપુર તીર્થ (શ્રી શાંતિનાથ ભગવાન) ઉત્તર ગુજરાતના બેચરાજી સ્ટેશનથી એક માઇલ દૂર આવેલા શંખલપુર ગામમાં ત્રણ શિખરવાળું ભોંયરાબંધી વિશાળ મંદિર આવેલું છે. મૂળનાયક શ્રી શાંતિનાથ ભગવાનની પ્રભાવશાળી પ્રતિમા અહીં બિરાજમાન છે. અહીં મૂળ ગભારો, ભોંયરૂ અને ભમતિના ૨૫ ગોખલાઓમાં પણ મૂર્તિઓ બિરાજમાન છે. મૂળ તો લક્ષ્મણ નામના રાજાએ પોતાના નામ પરથી વસાવેલા આ ગામનું નામ સલખણપુર હતું. એમાંથી એનું નામ શંખલપુર બની ગયું. ચૌદથી સત્તર સૈકા સુધી આ ગામમાં શ્રાવકોની વસ્તી ઘણી મોટી હતી અને જૈનોની જાહોજલાલી હતી. કવિશ્રી ગુણવિજયજીએ વિ. સં. ૧૬૮૭માં રચેલા કોચરવ્યવહારી રાસમાં એવી હકીકત મળે છે કે શ્રેષ્ઠી કોયરે શ્રી સુમતિસાધુસૂરિ (જન્મ વિ. સં. ૧૪૯૪ અને સ્વર્ગવાસ વિ. સં. ૧૫૫૧) નું વ્યાખ્યાન સાંભળ્યું. સૂરિજીએ ઉપદેશમાં અહિંસા વિશે કહ્યું ત્યારે કોચર શ્રેષ્ઠીએ બહુચરાજી પાસે થતી હિંસાની વાત કરી. એ સમયે ગુરુજીએ સાજણસિંહ નામના ખંભાતના સંઘના પ્રતિષ્ઠિત આગેવાનને આ અંગે કંઇક કરવા કહ્યું. સાજણસિંહે પોતાના પ્રભાવનો ઉપયોગ કરીને સુલતાન પાસેથી ફરમાન મેળવ્યું. એણે કોચરને બાર ગામનો અધિકારી બનાવ્યો.અધિકાર મળતાંની સાથે જ બારે ગામમાં અમારી પડહ વગડાવ્યો અને એ દિવસથી બહુચરાજી વગેરે ગામોમાં થતી જીવહિંસા બંધ થઇ. ચૌદમા સૈકામાં માંડવગઢના મંત્રી પેથડકુમારે અહીં એક જિનમંદિર બનાવ્યું હતું. અહીંનાં ભોંયરાઓમાંથી ઘણી જિનપ્રતિમાઓ મળતાં એ પ્રાચીન મંદિરોનો પુરાવો આપે છે. વિ. સં. ૧૮૭૬ માં નૂતન મંદિરનું નિર્માણ થયેલું છે અને વિ. સં. ૧૯૦૫માં એની પ્રતિષ્ઠા કરવામાં આવી હતી.
