[ord Elgar aflet zya yaiz144... stand is that no vrddhi of tithis is admissible according to Jain Shastras. We however cannot accept this view, as all authors discussing the question of tithis, have also discussed the question of vrddhi. We cannot also accept his view that the second half of Umasvati's Rule is spurious, as it has been consistently quoted or paraphrased in all works of the Tapagaccha school dealing with the question of tithis. And I am very much astonished to see that a learned and orthodox scholar of Acharya Sagarananda Suri's attainments should make bold to say that an inconvenient rule is spurious. A passage quoted and used with such remarkable frequency cannot be lightheartedly regarded as spurious. On the contrary, it must be held to be authentic and absolutely genuine. Acharya Sagarananda Suri's attitude is much more surprising as he applies his own interpretation of the first part of Umasvat's Rule to the case of vrddhi in the popular Panchanga. This puts him into a faulty position of srutahani and asrutakalpana, ignoring what is seen or proved and assuming what is not seen or proved. So I hold that the extension of Umasvati's Rule क्षये पूर्वा तिथिः कार्या to the case of vrddhi of tithis is unjustifiable in the face of actual existence of वृद्धौ कार्या तथोत्तरा.
Let us now turn to examine the authorities offered by Acharya Sagarananda Suri in support of his interpretation of Umasvati's Rule. There is no direct evidence such as a commentary or interpretation given by any old writer similar to the one given by Acharya Sagarananda Suri available, and so he has to depend upon indirect evidence only. He thinks that this indirect evidence is supplied by two documents. The first is a passage from a work called Hiraprasna and the second is a two-sheet pamphlet in Pothi form bearing the title
श्रीतिथिहानिवृद्धिविचारः । श्रीविजयदेवीयानां पूर्णिमामावास्ययोवृद्धौ त्रयोदश्या एव वृद्धिभर्वतीति मतपत्रकम्.
Of these Hiraprasna is a work of about 1650 V. E., and is a collection of Questions put to Acharya Hira vijaya Suri and his Answers to them, pu together in a Book form by his pupil Kirtivijaya. In this work a question is put by members of Dvipabandarasangha, and Hiravijaya Suri has given his Answer. The text of the passage runs as follows:
पञ्चमी तिथिस्त्रटिता भवति, तदा तत्तपः कस्यां तिथौ क्रियते, पूर्णिमायां च त्रुटितायां कुत्र, इति प्रश्नः । अत्रोत्तरम्-पञ्चमी तिथिटिता भवति तदा तत्तपः पूर्वस्यां तिथौ क्रियते । पूणिमायां च श्रुटितायां त्रयोदशीचतुर्दश्योः fata, farat g afacería ( Page 32 ).
Acharya Sagarananda Suri regards this passage as supporting his view re: adjustments of tithis when they are ksina. I think the passage does not at all refer to the question of adjustments of tithis due to ksaya, but to the practice
