If Chaturthi in the bright half of Bhadrapada is ksina, the Samvatsari should be observed on the previous day of Trtiya in which Chaturthi is merged. The ksaya or vrddhi of Panchami in this month has nothing to do with the date of Samvatsari. The adoption of this procedure does not create any flaw or defect in religious rites, and no prayaschitta is prescribed for the mixing up of two Aradhanas.
(iv) With reference to vrddhi of tithis, it is the second day of the tithi in the Panchanga that is to be selected as audayiki tithi for the purpose of Aradhana. If for instance, there are two Astamis in the Panchanga, the fast for Astami should be observed on the second day of Astami. If there are two Chaturdashis the Paksika should be performed on the second day of Chaturdashi. If there are two Chaturthis in the bright half of Bhadrapada, the Samvatsari should be observed on the second day of Chaturthi. The vrddhi of Panchami or of Purnima and Amavasya cannot affect the date of Samvatsari or of the observances for those dates. The first day of a vrddha tithi is left barren. The same principle should govern the occurrence of intercalary months.
(v) No modifications in the accepted Panchanga as suggested by Acharya Sagarananda Suri are justified according to the Jain Shastras, and no valid reasons are shown and proved for such modifications on the ground of a valid Jitavyavahara ; the Jita attempted to be established, is not valid, as conditions for its validity as laid down in the Shastras are not fulfilled.
(vi) The date of Samvatsari is Chaturthi and not Panchami in the bright half of Bhadrapada. Kalakacharya, in early times shifted it back from Panchami to Chaturthi. Since then this Panchami ceased to be a major parva day, although it is an ordinary auspicious day. On account of this shifting back of the date of Samvatsari, the date of Chaturmasika Pratikramana had to be shifted back to Chaturdashi in the bright half of Asadha. The date of fortnightly Pratikramana is fixed to be Chaturdashi.
(vii) The mention of the period of one month and twenty nights coming between the full-moon day of Asadha on the one hand and of Samvatsari on the other, is made on very rough calculation and hence this number should be taken to be approximate. Similarly, the mention of seventy nights remaining after the Samvatsari of the period of Chaturmasya, is also a very rough and approximate calculation in the Shastras. In normal years, the calculation may come out to be correct. When however, intercalary months occur before or after the Samvatsari, it is the established practice of the Tapagaccha school to ignore the days of such intercalary month. Similarly, they should ignore
