________________ ૨૬૮ [જૈન દૃષ્ટિએ તિથિનિ અને પૌરાધન .. part of Umasvati's Rule comes to our help. As has been stated above this Rule in its first part is in the form of an Apurva-vidhi, an originating or crcative injunction, and so creates a new tithi like Astami etc. So the previous tithi, is no longer Saptami for the Aradhana but it is Astami which is thus made to touch sunrise, and is audayiki Astami for Aradhana. It is correct to say that this creative injunction has two parts, negation of previous tithi and imposition of the next tithi shown as ksina in the Panchanga. We cannot help it because it is so ordained by a vidhivakya, which leaves us no choice but to obey it. So there is no question of any flaw arising out of this procedure. Nor is there any Prayaschitta prescribed for mixture of tithis so obtained in any of the Shastras. In actual date of the tithi arrived at by applying my interpretation of Umasvati's Rule and of Acharya Sagarananda Suri's interpretation, there is no difference; but the interpretation of Acharya Sagarananda Suri attempts modifications with the existing scheme of tithis which is an objectionable procedure and is rightly objected to by Acharya Vijaya Ramachandra Suri. The case of ksaya of Purnima and Amavasya is a bit complicated, and I think Acharya Sagarananda Suri attempts to interpret Umasvati's Rule to avoid this complication. I do not however think that such interpretation is necessary to meet this complication. The previous day which is Chaturdashi, is the day of Paksika, and Paksika is a rite which is tithiniyata and hence must be performed on Chaturdashi only. We thus require an audayiki Chaturdashi for this Paksika, and so cannot allow it to be Purnima or Amavasya. What about the rites which are prescribed or voluntarily undertaken to be ob served on that day? Can we use Chaturdashi which is already taken up by Paksika, for the rites of these tithis? I see no harm in abserving the fast etc., and other rites like Kalyanakas prescribed for these dates on that day. But the passage from Hiraprasna discussed above makes a better proposal. It says that the observances to be practised on Purnima and Amavasya can be shifted to Trayodashi or Chaturdashi or even to Pratipada following as these fasts etc. are not tithiniyata and thus are shiftable. This proposal solves all difficulties facing Acharya Sagarananda Suri. Samvatsari is now fixed for Chaturthi and not for Panchami in the bright half of Bhadrapada. Therefore all rites relating to Samvatsari must be performed on the day of Chaturthi in the popular Panchanga; if it is a ksina tithi, they should be performed on Trtiya; if it is a vrddha tithi, on the second day of Chaturthi in the popular Panchanga. The ksaya or vrddhi of Panchami has nothing to do here as Panchami is longer the day of Samvatsari.
