poce] Jainism v/s.Gujarați Text Books. [244 word signifies the first Lord. In that lesson at page 142 it is stated as follows :
નાભી અને મરૂદેવીના પુત્ર ઋષભદેવજી જૈન ધર્મના આદિ તીર્થકર છે, અને તે આદિનાથ અને આદીશ્વર ભગવાનને નામે પ્રસિદ્ધ છે. ચોવીસમા તીર્થંકર મહાવીર સ્વામી ઈ. સ. પૂર્વે છઠા સૈકામાં થયા, તે પહેલાં ઘણું વર્ષ અગાઉ ઋષભદેવજી થઈ ગયા કહેવાય છે.”
Rishabhdevji the son of Nabhi and Marudevi is the first Tirthankar of the Jain re'igion, and he is known by the name of God Adinath and Adish war. Rushabhdevji is said to have existed many years before the twenty fourth Tirthankara Mahavira Swami who lived in the sixth Century B. C.” This immediately shows that the statement quoted above from the ninth lesson viz:- that origin of the Jain religion is to be traced to Mahavira is evidently incorrect, for it is only preposterous to say that the 24th Sage of a religious sect is the founder of that sect.
A similar comp'aint about the Historic inaccuracy referred to above, our Association has to make with regard to the Gujarati version of the History of India, translated from the English work in the same subject by E. Marsden Esq: on page 45-46 of the said. Gujarati History we find the following:
જે અરસામાં બુદ્ધે બૌદ્ધ ધર્મ માર્ગને ઉપદેશ કર્યો તે જ અરસામાં વર્ધમાન નામના બીજા એક ક્ષત્રી રાજાએ મહાવીર નામ ધારણ કરી બૌદ્ધ ધર્મને ઘણી બાબતેમાં મળ પંથે સ્થા. મહાવીર જીન (પવિત્ર માણસ) કહેવાયું તેથી તેણે સ્થાપેલે પંથ જૈન અને તેના અનુયાયીઓ જૈન માર્ગ કહેવાય છે. કેટલાક વિદ્વાનોને એવો મત છે કે જેનમાર્ગ બૌદ્ધ માર્ગ પહેલાં સ્થપાયે અને જેને પોતે પણ એમ કહે છે.”
i. e. During the period in which Budha preached Budhism a Kshatriya king named Vardhmana having assumed the appellation of Mahavira founded a sect similar in many respects to Budhism. Mahavira was called Jina (holy man), and so the religion founded by him is called the Jain religion and his followers the Jains. Some of the scholars are of opinion that Jainism was founded before Budhism. And the Jains themselves say so too.
