When Bhagavāna Shree Rishabhadeva, on the acquisition of perfect knowledge ( $qaşult ) was preaching, soated on a Samavasarana prepared by gods, Marichi accompanied his father and other brothers for the purpose of paying homage to him. On seeing the splendour of the Samavasarana and hearing the preaching of Dharma, Marichi became wearied of life and was initiated into the Order of Monks by Bhagaväna Shree Rishabhadeva. Marichi mastered the principles and practice of the duties of a Sadhu. His indifference to worldly objects increased and he became indifferent to his own body. By observing the three kinds of preservation of the activities of the mind ( Mara ), speech ( 42109 and of the body ( buurt ) and carefulness about, 1. going about (Sulara ), 2. speech ( fra ), 3. obtaining food and drink ( 299 ), 4. carefulness in lifting up and laying down things ( 24LELAH'sHaGauguulala ) and 5. careful deposit of urine, fæces, phlegm, dirt etc. ( H yGulalala ) and conquering the four varieties of passions viz. Krodha ( 514 ) Anger Māna ( H ) Pride, Māyā (HNL) Deceit and Lobha (die) Greed, Marichi very satisfactorily maintained the duties of a Sãdhu. He studied eleven Angas from superior teachers and remained a very long time in company of Bhagvāna Shree Rishabhadeva where-ever he went.
Once in the summer season when the ground was greatly heated by the rays of the sun, the bodies of travellers were becoming warm and when it was difficult for people to walk without shoes, Marichi going about with Bhagavāna Shree Rishabhadeva, experienced great heat; his body became very warm, his clothes were drenched with perspiration and he had severe thirst. Marichi was unable to endure the pangs of heat and thirst; under the wicked influence of Charitra Mohaniya Karma ( 1177 410-14 374), his ideas became impure; he thought of acting in accordance with his own whims, and thought himself unable to preserve the noble ideals of ascetic life. He thoughi within himself, I am destitute of good qualities and desire bodily comforts and how can I possibly give up the religious vows accepted by me? By giving up my vows I will be proroking laughter, hence I will find out a device inorder that my vows may be preserved and that I may not have to endure unnecessary hardship.' Marichi Muni getting tired of bodily distress, became ready to neglect the command of Tirthankara and to break the religious Vows he had taken at the time of his initiation. He accomplished a new course out of his own intellectual invention and resolved -" These Mendicants are free from the triple control of thought, speech and action while I am vanquished by them; so let there be a distinguishing mark of triple staff of a Brahman ascetio.
