Notes A. The span of Mahāvīra as non-omniscient (chadmastha) and omniscient was twelve year six and half months and thirty years, respectively. He attained omniscience on the tenth of bright half of the month of Vaišākha and attained liberation on the moonless night of the dark half of the month Kārttika. In this way, the duration of Mahāvīra comes twenty-nine years five month and twenty days and total span including that of his state of non-omniscience is forty-two years five days. Hence the period is reckoned as little over forty-two years.
Mahavira's span as a monk is mentioned as forty years in Paryusaņākalpa implying that the stretch over forty-two years is not taken into account.
