________________ 121 (P. 167. A. 3. S. 2. but as soon as the statement of the tragic fate of the demons comes to the forefront, this AITH begins to vanish and ultimately its remembrance only heightens the effect of 60 by sheer contrast. Thus there is no fault of giftefore in the present verse. A parallel verse in this connexion is '84 7 Hatc&of' etc. as quoted already on page 152 in which the 7x- in the words pracaafqada: etc. is entirely subordinated to the predominant $607TH. The same is the case in the following verse (196). On your body full of horripilation the lioness made marks of her teeth and nails, with the desire of drinking your blood-( Har). These marks were seen by other sages almost with a sense of envy. Here, apparently, the whole picture seems to be that of a man being caressed by an amorous woman and looked at with an envious eye by other persons. But on second thought and on the strength of the context the whole atmosphere of 21 vanishes, giving place to hata which is undoubtedly the principal 24 in this verse. Here the ti is not only not contradictory to the path but definitely heightens its effects. If, however, the rival 19 mars the effect of the predominant TET by making an outrageously bold appearance, then there is the fault of Tasiferent, as for instance in the verse 197. Here when we read the verse, we forget that aiset was killed by Rama, but the complete pun raises before us the picture of a woman going to meet her lover with due decorations of her body. Thus the predominant uite in this verse is weakened by the agressive ki, instead of being heightened. 16 For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org Jain Education International
