अन्वयमाष्यम्। यः पाशैः त्रिभिः अन्तः बहिरपि बन्धरूपेण निहितैः त्रिषु पदेषु अग्र-मध्य-मूलभागेषु बहिःशरीरे, तथा अन्त: मूलाधार-हृदय-भ्रमध्यशिर:स्थानेषु अवम-मध्यम-उत्तमरूपतया ग्रथितैः ब्रह्म-विष्णु-रुद्रसङ्घकैः बन्धनसाधनैः प्रन्थिभिः वाक्-प्राण सम्बन्धैः बद्धः नियमित: इति प्रसिद्धः आसीत्, तथा देवताप्रसादेन तस्य वरुणस्य आवरणशक्तिसत्त्वस्य देवतात्मन: पाशात् आवरणरूपात् तस्मात् बन्धनत्रयात् विमुक्तः पुनः विमोकं प्राप्तः इति च प्रसिद्धम् ; तदेतत् तस्यैव मन्त्रादर्शनाद् गम्यते - “ उदुत्तमं मुमुग्धि नो वि पाशं मध्यम चूत | अवाधमानि जीवसे" (ऋ. म. १.२५-२१) इति ॥ “शुनः शेपोयमवद् गृभीतस्त्रिज्वादित्यं द्रपदेषु बद्धः | अवैनं राजा वरुणः स सृज्याद् विद्वा अदब्धो विमुमोक्तु पाशान्" (ऋ • मं १-२५-१३) इति च || यः शुनः शेपः ऋषि: मन्त्राद्रष्टा देवरातः देवरातनाम्ना प्रसिद्धः देवैः विश्वामित्राय रातः दत्तः इति ; तथा च ब्राह्मणम्-- " देवा वा इमं मह्यमरासतेति सह दैवरातो वैश्वामित्र:" (ऐ. ब्रा. पं. ७) इति || अत्र याजुषं ब्राह्मणमपि एतमेवार्थ समर्थयति || " शुनः शेपमाजीगति वरुणोऽगृण्हात् | स एतां वारुणीमपश्यत् | उदुत्तमं वरुणपाशमस्मदित्याह! आत्मानमेवैतया वरुणपाशाद् विमुञ्चति" (तै. सं ५.२-१-४) इत्यादि || तथा च सर्वानुक्रमसूत्राम् - " कस्य पञ्चोनाऽऽजीगतिः शुन: शेपः स कृत्रिमो वैश्वामित्रो देवरातः” (ऋक् सर्वानु. सू. १-२४) इति ॥
सोऽय अन्तरात्मा ऋषिषु प्रतिष्ठित: सत्यः नित्यसिद्धः अमृतात्मा विश्ववेदाः सर्ववेत्ता च भवतीति ॥
COMMENTARY-SUMMARY TRANSLATION There are three nooses binding the Atman from within, and from without as well. Externally, the nooses in the body are at the bottom, in the middle and at the top in the head. Internally, they are in mulādhāra ( solar plexus ), in the heart, and in the centre of the eyebrows. In terms of gods, the nooses are, Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra. The seer Sunassepa was released by divine grace from all those three nooses of Varuņa, the god who envelops every Ātman. This was possible for the seer Sunaśśepa on account of his power to see a mantra. One may refer here to the following mantras : “Loosen our bonds that are above, in the middle, and down below, so that I may freely live" Rg. I-25-21); "Let the wise one ( Varuna) remove the bonds off me" (Rg. I-25-23).
Sunaśćepa is a seer, known also as Devarāta; he was given (rāta ) by the gods ( devaiḥ ) to Viśvàmitra, hence he was called Devarāta. Cf: “He is Devarāta who belongs to my lineage and so is Vaiśvāmitra. He was indeed given to me by the gods" (Ait. Brah. V).
