अन्वयभाष्यम् । यत् पयः सत्त्वबुद्धि-सत्त्वशुद्धि-मनःशान्त्याद्यभिवर्धकगुणयुक्तं विश्वस्य सकलप्रपञ्चस्य दर्शयत् प्रकाशयत् सर्वावभासकं आदित्यं दिव्यं तत् परं ज्योतिः ज्योतिस्तत्त्वं अन्तः अधि-आत्मनि सम्यक् प्रबोधयेत् तत् तादृशं सुपूतं स्वयं पवित्रं गव्यं आत्मीयं पयः रसात्मकं अमृतं एवमेताभि: ऋग्भिः संस्तुताः गोमातरः मे मदर्थे स्रावयन्तु वर्षयन्तु इति || अत्र गव्येन पयसा निवर्तितेन जीवनेन परिशुद्धान्तःकरणस्य स्वयमेव तदात्मज्योतिः प्रकाशते, स्वेन दिव्येन स्वरूपेण आविर्भवतीति यावत्, अनया ऋचा आत्मचैतन्यज्योतिषः प्रबोधं, तथा तत्र कारणीभूतं केवलं सात्त्विकं गव्यं पयश्च ऋषिः याचते, एतेन सत्त्वाहारात् सत्त्वशुद्धिर्भवितुमर्हतीति गम्यते । एतस्मिन् अर्थे औपनिषदं ब्राह्मणानुवचनमनुश्रूयते- “आहारशुद्धौ सत्त्वशुद्धिः, सत्त्वशुद्धौ ध्रुवा स्मृतिः, स्मृतिलम्भे सर्वग्रन्थीनां विप्रमोक्षः' (छां. उ. ७-२६-२) इति || तस्मात् सत्त्वशुद्ध्यर्थं गोरसाएव सर्वथा संसेवनीयः इति ॥
॥ इति अष्टमेऽनुवाके प्रथमं गोसूक्तम् समाप्तम् ॥
COMMENTARY—SUMMARY TRANSLATION Cow's milk has the virtue of promoting and developing bright intellect and of purifying the body and mind. May that milk awaken in me the heavenly light par excellence, that same light which illuminates the whole universe. Let the mother-cows allow the flow of that kind of milk which is like nectar. These Rks are in praise of mother-cows.
By drinking cow's milk only, the internal organs become purified, and the light of Ātman begins to glow. It bursts out with its natural and heavenly effulgence.
The awakening of the light of the Atman and its cause, namely the pure and purifying cow-milk are indicated here. It is further stated that good and pure food contributes to the purification of body and mind. Cf. " Pure food results in pure body and mind. Stable and clear memory accompanies a pure body and a pure mind. Intellect helped by good memory shatters all the knots of ignorance" ( Chha. Up. VII--26-2).
Thus ends the first hymn in the eighth Section.
