________________ INTRODUCTION Critical Apparatus: For the preparation of this critical edition the photo.copy of the paper ns. preserved in the Delā U pāśrayā Bbāņdāra has been utilized. The photo-copy is of the original size. It consists of 61 plates. This means the original. ms. contains 31 leaves. A11 the plates except the last one are 25.1 cm. x 10.7 cm. The last plate is 24.6 cm x 10.7 cm. The 59th and 61st plates consist of 21 and 15 lines respectively. Each one of the remaining plates consists of 17 lines. The last plate at the end bears the following words: ratnākarāvatārikā-adyaśloka-satartha. After these words some one has erased the note, namely, 'GIO R3 To 960' (i.e. 'box No. 23, ms. No. 170') and in its place has written 'CTO/99/9c ai.' At the end of the ms. it is stated that the ms. has been copied by Pt. Muni Sanghamāņikyagani and that the wish of the copyist is tbat the ms. should be honoured by Munis Sabajamandiragani etc. through constant reading. The Satārthi evds in the third line of the plate No. 60 (i.e. 30 B). After the end of the Satārthi some verses relating to the subject of the science of Grammar occur.? These verses are followed by the remark, 'iti lakṣaṇa ślokāḥ'. Pt. Lalchand Bhagavandas Gandhi prepared the copy of the ms. for the personal use of Muni Sri Malayavijayaji. Muniji kindly handed over the copy to us for the preparation of the critical edition of the present work. The autbor of the Satārtbi has used the sâtras of Siddhahemacandravyākarana and has referred to Uņādi. At various places Pt. Lalchand has given in the brackets the numbers iudicating adhyāya, pāda and sūtra. Wherever he has not done so, I have found out the source. Moreover, I have traced out the original sources of Uņādi. Quotations from various lexicons occur in the Satārtbi. In the case of many of them Pt La lcband has been able to name the original source and in that of the rest I have done the same. However, even I could not trace out the original sources of the quotations that are from ekāksari lexicons. That is because not all the ekāksari lexicons are available to me. 1. satārthipratir likhită pujyārādhyaấripanditaprakāndamandalimauliratnapūjyapanditaśriku laratnaśişyaparamānunā panditasanghamānikya ganina// vācyamānā panditasahajamandira ganipramukhaiḥ krtārthikāryā// 2.
