________________ 32 Śramana, Vol 66, No. 4, October-December 2015 Arhanandi it states that he has destroyed passion with his sword which is lustre of his uninterrupted and good penances. About Subhacandrasiddhantadeva it says that his feet are worshipped by kings. Praising Prabhācandradeva it says that he has subdued the kings in form of bondage of karma. Inscription no. V is from a stone tablet in a Jaina temple at Kalholi, in the Gokak Taluka of Belgaum district. It records a grant made by Ratta chieftain king Rāja and Śri-Kārtaviryadeva. It says that at the time of king Raja the ocean of Jaina religion had become full and his wife Mailadevi was devoted to the worship of the lotus feet of Jina. King Raja's daughter Candrikādevi was like the beautiful moonlight which caused the increase of the nectar of religion, which was celebrated throughout the world. She appears like the wife of Indra when engaged in the worship of Jina. About king Rāja it is said, "he protects the world with his greatness which consists in his being supreme all over those learned in the worship in Jina, in his being the best of holy men, in his being a very ocean in respect of abundance of his good qualities and who duly honours kings of Jaina religion." The inscription further says "other kings are addicted to the forbidden recreatns of gaming, hunting, eating flesh, associating with courtesans, running after other men's wives, mixing with low people, stealing and unfair ram-fighting and cock-fighting; but even apart from that, are they like you? O king Rāja! devoted to the worship of Jina giving gifts to world-renowned saints?" The inscription states about king Rāja- "he whose head is always purified by the fragrant waters of the rites of the Jaina religion, he who always relates the legend of Jaina religion, a very moon to the ocean of nectar of the doctrines of Jina, the mine of the jewel of upright behavior-caused to be erected, a temple of Jina at Kalpole, which is the best (town) in the whole world wonderful to be held, the diadem of the earth, having three pinnacles that are unparallaled, so that Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śīva were charmed with it and said '(the Jaina religion is) a spotless religion." Here Jainism is seen to be given preference over Brahmanism.
