PARSVANATU AS SEEN IN MAHIA-PURANA AND ...
१२३
When Subhouma prince saw this he addressed, "Oh, sage without aware of giving trouble (Upasarga) to others and by that deed you will have inflow of sin (Papasrava), you are following wrong method. By your false way of practice (Mithyatva) you cannot attain liberation. To justify his argument he gave four examples. 1. By beating (bruising) the husk of rice one cannot get rice. 2. By stirring (Churning) the water one cannot get butter or
ghee. 3. By burning ordinary stone one cannot get gold. 4. By running away to rescue oneself and falling in the fire will
not help him.
Out of these four examples, Cavundaraya has picked up only two-namely the first and third. He has selected easily convincing examples. Parsvanatha received presents from king Jayasena of • Saketapura. He heard the description of Saketapura which reminded him his Ananda Bhava. This resulted in a decision to renunciate the wordly things (M.P. 73:120-122). Cavundaraya has retained the original spirit, condensed the details and expressed that hearing the details of Saketapura Parsvanath recollected the Ananda Bhava, decided renounciation of internal (Antar) and (exțernal) (Bhava) possessions (Parigrihas).
: 'In short Cavundaraya Purana varies from Mahapurana in many respects. He creates new situation, gives human touch to characters and strikes a balance between ascetic and householders life. In many cases he moves away from Mahapurana and shows the influence of some other sources. In short, his interest is in common people and his effort is to convince them and bring to right path.
