________________ INTRODUCTION xxxi AST: FITCE, 7 7777777" (pp. 5, 30), " Teuta TET: FITE, 7 TETRTI #loha 17 : Fra 1" (p. 24). Durveka has also followed him in making similar remarks (see pp. 12, 55 etc.). Similar introductory sentences are found in both the texts. This Tippana also refers to the composition of a treatise named Svasamvedana-siddhi :' grea Fasafast TH FUH" (p. 32). Vidyabhushana does not mention the name of this treatise. 3. The Nyaya-bindu-tika-tippani--This work has been edited by Prof. Stcherbatsky in the Bibliotheca Buddhica. He attributed its authorship to Mallavadi. The MS. of this Tippani was incomplete and hence it has been printed in the same condition. The printed Tippani covers only upto the 'TETTHEhrefia TFUTET TATOT' of the Dharmottara's Tika (p. 85, line 3). Its mangala-sloka in the beginning is not available. The available Tippani is not complete even on the first chapter. Hence, the last sentence of this chapter is not available. Prof. Stcherbatsky conjectured the name of Mallavadi only on the basis of the lists of MSS. which mention one Tippana by Mallavadi. The comparison with the Tippana by Mallavadi clearly shows that the Tippani edited by Prof. Stcherbatsky is different from the Tippana by Mallavadi. This mistake has been corrected by Prof. Stcherbatsky himself in his English translation of the Nyaya-bindu. In the printed Tippani there is a reference to the commentaries by Vinitadeval and Santabhadra.2 It has been clearly mentioned that Dharmottara has refuted the views of these commentaries. He has also rejected the view of Jnanagarbha regarding Mana sapratyaksha.3 4. The Dharmottara-pradipa--This work is a commentary on the Nyaya-bindu-tika by Durveka Misra, much longer than any of the above mentioned sub-commentaries. The present edition publishes this sub-commentary for the first time. It explains each and every term of the Dharmottara's commentary. Its 1 Nyaya-bindu-tika-tippani, pp. 3, 13, 16, 17, 18, 21, 23. > Ibid, p. 13, 16. 3 Ibid, p. 3.
