અહિંસાના બે ક્ષેત્ર સત્ય સાધ્ય પણ છે અને સાધન પણ. તે મુકામ પણ છે, માર્ગ પણ છે. પરંતુ અહિંસા માત્ર માર્ગ જ છે. અહિંસા એટલે પૂર્ણ નિર્વિકારતા. તે વગર સત્યનું દર્શન અશક્ય છે. તેથી સત્યના દર્શન સારુ અહિંસા સાધન થઈ એમ ગાંધીજી કહેતા.
વ્યક્તિગત અહિંસાની શરૂઆત નિર્વિકારતાના મહાવરાથી થશે. નિર્વિકારતાના મહાવરાથી દેહાસક્તિ ક્ષીણ બનશે. દેહાસક્તિ ક્ષીણ થતા દેહ-ભિન્નતા યાને ‘દેહથી આપણે જુદા છીએ' તેનો અનુભવ થશે. આ જ આત્મદર્શન છે. એ વ્યક્તિગત
અહિંસાની પૂર્ણતા થઈ. આત્મદર્શનનો સંબંધ પિંડ (દેહ, મન વગેરેનો સંઘાત)ની સાથે છે. હરિ-દર્શન એટલે બ્રહ્માંડના દરેક પદાર્થમાં ઈશ્વરનું દર્શન કરવું, ઈશ્વરષ્ટિ રાખવી અર્થાત્ સમાજ યા સમૂહની સાથે, બ્રહ્માંડની સાથે વ્યાપકતાનો સંબંધ રાખવો. | સામૂહિક અહિંસાનો આરંભ દુર્જન પ્રત્યે સહિષ્ણુતાનો ભાવ રાખવાથી થાય છે. સહિષ્ણુતામાંથી દુર્જન પ્રત્યે આત્મીયતા જન્મવી જોઈએ. આત્મીયતામાંથી પ્રેમનો ઉત્કર્ષ થશે, ત્યારે દુર્જન તરફ પ્રેમ ઊભરાશે અને તેના પ્રભાવથી દુર્જનનું પરિવર્તન થતા તેની દુર્જનતા નાશ પામશે. પ્રેમનો ઉત્કર્ષ એટલે સંપૂર્ણ વ્યાપકતા. સંપૂર્ણ વ્યાપકતા એટલે હરિ-દર્શન. આ છે સામૂહિક અહિંસાની પૂર્ણતા.
