मानती है, वह हिन्दू है ।" हिन्दू कानूनके विशेषज्ञ १० सर हरीसिंह गौरका कथम है कि हिन्दू शब्द शास्त्राधार पर अबस्थित नहीं है । मुसलिम विजेताओंने इम शब्दका निर्माण किया था । पं. जवाहरलाल नेहरूने लिखा है कि "भारतवर्ष के लिए हिन्द शब्दका व्यवहार होता है, जो हिन्दुस्तान शहनका संक्षिप्त रूप है । पश्चिम एशिमा ईरान, टर्की, ईराक, अफगानिस्तान, ईजिप्ट तथा अन्यत्र भारतको पहलेकी तरह आज भी हिन्द कहा जाता है । प्रत्येक भारतीय पदार्थको हिन्दी कहते हैं। हिन्दीका धर्मसे कोई सम्बन्ध नहीं है । भारतीय मुमलिम अथवा भारतीय ईसाई उतना ही हिन्दी है, जितना कि हिन्दन धर्मको माननेवाला । अमेरिफावासी सभी भारतीयोंको हिन्दू कहते हैं, यह पूर्णतया मिथ्या बात नहीं है । हो ! यदि वे हिन्दी शब्दका प्रयोग करते तो पूर्ण सत्य कमन होता ।' उनका यह कथन विशेष ध्यान देने योग्य है-"बुद्ध धर्म
और जैनधर्म यथार्थ में हिन्दूधर्म नहीं है और न २ वैदिकधर्म ही हैं, यद्यपि इनकी उत्पत्ति भारतवर्ष में ही हुई और वे भारतीय जीवन, संस्कृति तथा तत्त्वज्ञान के मुख्य अंग है। भारत में जो कोई बौद्ध अथवा जैन हो, यह भारतीय तत्त्वज्ञान
और संस्कृधिनी र प्रतिशः इति है, कि धर्मपी रिसे उगो कोई भी हिन्दू नहीं है।" }, "We are called Hindus, a term for which there is 110 scriptural
authority. It is a term carried by the nuslim conquerors of India to describe the non-descript people living in the cisIndus country. At the most the term is about 300 years old, while Hinduism as we practise it today is about 1200 years old'!.

They would be perfectly correct, if they used the word of Hindi",
