This means that he had no knowledge of its existence. As a matter of fact, no modern scholar of Nyaya had any knowledge of it. Other Commentaries on NKu Gangesa's son Vardhamana (c. 1300-1350 A.D.) wrote a commentary Prakasa on NKu which needed commentaries to bring out its implicatons and hidden significance. About it Gopi Nath Kavirajji writes : "Vardhamana's commentary, inspite of the great learning displayed in its pages, is not of much help in this respect, as it does not follow Udayana line by line and phrase by phrase."'ll Varadaraja (15th century A.D.), a son of Ramadeva Misra, wrote a running commentary Bodhani on the whole text of NKu. So it is much useful to students and scholars. Gunananda Vidyavagisa (16th century A.D.) too wrote a commentary on the complete text of NKu. This commentary was held in great repute in those days. We conclude that by writing a commentary Sanketa on NKu our author Vamadhvaja has secured an important place among the learned commentators of NKU. And being the oldest commentator, he assumes even greater importance. The manuscript is so corrupt that I was hesitant to undertake the work of editing it. After much hestitation, I persuaded myself to edit it because for more than 750 years no scholar attempted to edit it, so it is better to edit the corrupt manuscript than not to edit it and allow it to rot and remain in darkness for an indefinite period of time. The edition is bound to be fraught with flaws. But I thought it wise to leave to the great scholars of Nyaya and Mimamsa the task of removing the flaws and making the text as flawless as possible. Of course, I have made sincere efforts to present the text correctly, to the best of my ability, without allowing defects to creep in. 11.
