________________ About a Forgotten Grammarian Dhanapala 71 'Vraj' seems to have been smuggled in later Dbatupathas on account of its association with 'vaj' in Gana I as observed by Dr. Pulsuless, It may be taken that originally 'vaj' alone appeared here. The word 'gati', found in the definition here, is absent in many Dhatupathas, therefore, it may be taken to be a latter addition. Now we have 'margasamskära' and 'marganasamskara' to deal with, Between these two 'marganasamskara' seems preferable, because it conforms to the actual usage of the language. Hemacandra has explained it as meaning 'perfect or trim an arrow.' From this discussion, it is clear, that Dhanapala has chosen the right meaning for 'vaj'.00 There is every possibility of his being influenced by Durga, because Kṣiraswami has noted similar opinion of Durga, 2.5.8. Pat...etc-Pa. Dhatupaṭha gives the group of roots which are described as 'bhāṣārthāḥ'. Sākaṭāyana2 and Sayanas also take these roots to be bhaṣārthaḥ. Ksirasvami, 04 Maitreyarakṣita65 and Hemacandra describe these roots as bhasarthaḥ. According to Puruaskara, Dhanapala" also takes these roots as bhāsārthah. Dr. Pulsulees has suggested in his thesis that bhāṣārthaḥ has a better claim to acceptance, because it is found in older Dhatupaṭhas. Moreover, he suggests that the Dhatusutra 'Pata...etc, bhāṣärthaḥ' means that these roots have meanings which are current in the language, because none of these roots either means 'to speak' or 'to shine'. After describing these roots as bhāṣārthah, Dhanapala interprets the sutra in a queer way. These roots 'pat etc.' form their present stem with 'nic' when they are used transitively. Other bhasartha roots also form their present stem with 'nic' under similar circumstances. Puruşakāra bitterly criticises this view of Dhanapala. 2.5.9. Pad--Pa. Dhatupatha reads 'vada samdeśavacane', but Dhanapala® gives 58. The Sanskrit Dhatupathas, P. 153. 59. Haimadhātupārāyaṇa, P. 251 - t t I' 60. Anyhow, Dhanapala, as quoted by Ma. Dha. Puruşakāra, p. 77 :- धनपालस्तु पद सन्देशवचने, पादयति, पदति, अन्यत्र पदयते इति । Pandit Yudhisthira Mimämsaka notes here that in this sentences, we get innumerable variants, such as वद, वादयति, and वदति, वादयते ।
