About a Forgotten Grammerian Dhana pala

71.1. Yamo'pariveşaņe (Gaņa I). In this Dhātusütra, a uvrtti of the words 'na' and 'mit' comes from the preceding dhātusūtras. Therefore, the sūtra would convey that 'yam' is not mit when it is used in the sense otber than 'pariveșana' as Maitreyarakṣitago has put it. Dhanapalaoo also agrees with this interpretation. Kişņa Lilāśuka and Sāyaṇasi in support of this view of Dhanapala, quote from Kāśikā and Jinendra's Nyāsa on Ast. 1-3-89, Kşicasvamio2 holds quite an opposite view. According to him, yam' gets 'mit sajñā' when used in the sense of 'aparivesaņa, Grammarians of Candra, Kaumāra and Bhoja Schouls interpret it similarly. Sāyaṇao3 refutes this view in strong words and finds fault with them for ignoring 'na'.
7.1.2. Vanu (Gana 1)-This root occurs in the Dhātusütra “gläsnāvanuyamam ca'. Dhanapālas states in the case of 'vanu' that it is included in Ghatadi by Dramidas. For them this root is always .mit samjñaka,' while Aryas treat It as 'mit' optionally.
7.1.3. Samo darśane'- This Dbātusütra also gets anuvrtti of 'na' and 'mit from the preceeding sūtras, Therefore Dhanapalaos is right in interpreting it thus. Sam' is not 'mit samjñaka' in the meaning of darśana. Kşirasvāmios reads samo darśane', but ignores the anuvịtti of 'na'. Therefore according to him the meaning of the dhātusūtra is not different from that of Dhanapala as Sāyanao7 has noted. Dhanapala's views are found in Puruşakāra as regards the forms of the following roots given in Pa-Dhātupātha as, inut, barh-balh (in the sense of prädhānya), varh - valh (in the sense of paribhāşaņa, etc.) sıkļ, kuń, and şņiha. 8,1.1.
