Afterwards they all vowed to perform austerities together. Mabābala secretly cherishing the desire of advance on the path of Moksha ( liberation) began to out-do others in austerity and added extra fasts studiously keeping it secret from his colleagues. Mabābala had acquired so much merit that he eventually became a Tirthankara, but this pious duplicity practised by him doomed him to be re-born as a female in the next birth.
દંભ સંસારસમુદ્રમાં પાડનાર છે
“સંસારરૂપ મહાસાગરને ઓળંગવાનું સાધને અધ્યાત્મરૂપે વહાણું બહુ ભાગ્યથી મેળવાય છે; પરંતુ તે અધ્યાત્મરૂપ વહાણુમાં જે કંભરૂ૫ હાનું પણ છિદ્ર રહેલું હોય, તે તેનાથી સંસારસમુદ્રને પાર પામી શકાય નહિ.”—૧૭ धर्मे दम्भ उपद्रवःबने हुताशः कलहः सुहृत्वे रोगः शरीरे कमले हिमं च । यथा तथा दम्भ उपप्लवोऽयं धर्मेऽवसेयः सुविचारवद्भिः ॥ ५८॥ * Thoughtful persons should consider fraud as an
impediment to religion, as fire to the forest, quarrel to friendship, disease to body and ice to lotus. (58) ધર્મમાં દંભ ઉપદ્રવ છે
“ જેમ વનમાં અગ્નિ ઉપદ્રવ છે, મિત્રતામાં કલહ ઉપદ્રવ છે, શરીરમાં રોગ ઉપદ્રવ છે અને કમળમાં હિમ ઉપદ્રવ છે, તેમ ધર્મની અંદર-વિચારવાનેએ-દંભને ઉપદ્રવ સમજવો જોઈએ. ”–૫૮
