friendly. He was then in the Government College. He made me, through his close knowledge of it, a keen student of the Ramayan I have still a very good photo of him which I took in those days. I do not know if you would care to have a copy Once at my request he wrote a kind of Indian ‘Nursery Rhyme' for me in Hindi I have often repeated it when travelling in North India and it never fails to catch on. It might be of interest to know how these lines came to be written. My elder sister Miss Edith M. Jones of Woodsfock Mussoorie, felt the need of some Indian equivalent to some of our English rhymes. I asked my Pandit to make the venture, and in Hindi gave him e. g. some idea of our Pat-a-cake baker's man in a crude jungle. He seemed very pleased when he produced the enclosed lines Personally I think he succeeded admirably. Before I came away to Dacca he brought me, mucli to my surprise and delight, about 20 lines of affectionate farewell at parting." ___अर्थात्---"सब से प्रथम मै आपको यह बतला देना चाहता हूँ कि आप के भेजे हुए (पं० सत्यनारायण की मृत्यु के) समाचार को पढकर मुझे बहुत खेद हुआ है। आज से दस वर्ष पहले मुझे स्वर्गीय पडितजी की योग्यता का कुछ परिचय मिला था। तभी से हम लोगों में बड़ी मित्रता हो गई थी। वे उस समय गवर्नमेन्ट कालेज में पढ़ते थे। रामायण का उन्हे बहुत अच्छा ज्ञान था और उसी के द्वारा उन्होने मुझे भी रामायण का प्रेमी विद्यार्थी बना दिया। उन दिनो मैने उनका एक बहुत अच्छा फोटो लिया था। वह अब भी मेरे पास है। मै नही जानता कि आप उस फोटो की एक प्रति
