famine that occurred in the years 1257-1259 A.D. The Jagaḍucaritra of Sarvanandasūri (14th century of the Vikrama Era) hails Jagaḍū as the saviour of the world at several places (eg VI. 94, 97, 106, 109, III, II2, 137 : VII. 32 ) and the sixth Sarga of the work is named Sakalajanasañjivana. Moreover, the Abhidhānarājendra, Vol. IV, p. 1384, narrates the story of Jagadu, in which it is stated that “जगडूर्जगदुद्धर्त्ता भविष्यति ". The Abhidhanarajendra notes that its narration is in accordance with the story given in the Upadesatarangini. The printed edition of Ratnamandiragani's Upadeśatarangini ( 16th cent. V.S.), publish - ed by the Dharmabhyudaya Press, Vārāņasi in Vīra Samvat 2437 ( 1910-11 A.D.), however, does not contain the whole story as presented there. In the section on Danaphalopadesa, the instance of Jagadū is mentioned ( pp. 40-41 ) . There is stated, 'जगडूसाधुनाऽपि तोतलकसोलाभिधस्वपितृप्रोक्तं जगऊभा इत्यभिधानं दुष्काले जगज्जनजीवनाऽन्नप्रदानेन सत्यं कृतम् । ' (p. 40, 11. II - 12 ) जगऊआ is vocative form of जगऊ which appears to bear some similarity with Marathi, to be saved ' and its causal जगविणें 'to save'.

On the basis of this evidence we have taken the epithet त्रिजगडू in the sense of the saviour of the three worlds '. The word fg is evidently an Apabhramsa form. Can it be a derivative of त्रिजगदुद्धर्तृ ? ]
