the text of the commentary printed in the Ao edition explains the terms 'duddha' and 'pāne' accepted in the text proper in place of 'udupane', this commentarial passage containing the explanation is not original. It has been interpolated in the body of the text of the commentary by some learned person. This has been clearly suggested by the commentary on sūtra 999. We have offered special clarification of this point in a foot-note on p. 237 of the first part of this work. Readers are requested to refer to it.
In the selection of this reading we are helped by Niśithasūtra. In 13th Uddesa of Niśithasūtra there occur the terms mattae, addãe asie, mante, udupane, telle, phāṇie and vasäe. Here also the topic in hand pertains to the question as to how one sees one's own face. Hence all the objects that can bear the reflection of the face are enumerated here. The concerned contexts of Prajñāpanāsūtra and Niśithasūtra establish absolute originality of the reading "udupane. Let us note that the cyclostyle copy of Niśtthacūrni edited by Āc. Vijayapremasuriji and Ac. Vijayajambūsūriji yields the reading 'kuddāpāne' in place of ușupāņe' and gives a variant kumdapāņie' in the foot-note. The text of Niśithasūtra printed along with the Niśithacürni edited by Kamalamuniji follows the cyclostyle copy in this matter. These kuddāpāne and kumdapanie are the corrupt forms of udupăne. These corrupt forms are the result of scriptological error. Somebody under the influence of explanation contained in Cūrni has imagined them. It is necessary to give further details about the concerned reading of Niśithasūtra. We have come across the three versions of the concerned portion of Niśttha-sutra. They are as follows:
(1) jeo mattae appānam dehati dehamtam vă sātijjati evam addãe asie mante udupāne telle phanie vasāe appāņam dehati dehamtam vă sātijjati This reading is reproduced here from the copy prepared on the basis of old palm-leaf manuscripts.
(2) je bhikkhū mattae attānam dehati deo 2 evam je padiggaheo je adamsae jeo manimmio je asimmio je ábharaṇamsio je udda(uddu)pāņeo je udayakumbheo je mahukuño je tellakumo je ghayakumo je phānie. je vase. This version is found in some of the later manuscripts belonging to the period prior to 16th-17th centuries A. D.
