________________ Shri Mahavir Jain Aradhana Kendra www.kobatirth.org Acharya Shri Kailassagarsuri Gyanmandir Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammāsambuddhassa Preface The first part of the first volume of Pali-Hindi Dictionary was released by the former President of India, H.E. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on the occasion of the concluding function of the historic 2550th Mahaparinirvana celebration of Lord Buddha at Kusinagar on 2nd of May 2007. It is already in the market. Scholars of Pāli and Buddhism as well as the common readers welcomed it as the first serious attempt for the compilation of a Pāli-Hindi Dictionary. We feel immense pleasure in placing the second part of it before the world of scholars as well as those common readers who have deep interest in understanding the words of the Buddha. This dictionary is not simply a long string of Pali words and their meanings, as its unassuming name might suggest. Attempt is made here for the first time in the history of Pali lexicography to extract the meaning of a word from its actual usage in literature. Thus it explains the grammatical formation of each word and its various shades of meaning, enumerates the place of its occurance and provides copious citations from original Pali texts. The Pali extracts quoted herein have been taken from Vipassana Visodhana Vinyasa, Igatpuri (Maharastra) edition, based fully on the Chatha-Sangāyana recension of Pali Canonical books and their commentaries. We have taken these extracts without any alteration irrespective of the merits and demerits of these readings. We express once again our sincere gratitude to the great exegetes of the Pāli scriptural texts who are the principal sources for the etymologies and meanings of words entered herein. We are also thankful to the compilers of modern Dictionaries as well as to the editor of the Tipitaka Pāli MYANMĀBHIDHĀNA. We express our sense of high respect to Late Ven. Jagadish Kasyapa and honourable Sri Satyanārain Goenkā who remain to be the source of inspiration for the compilation of this Dictionary. His Excellency the Governor of Bihar, who is also the Chancellor of Mahavihara, has taken personal interest in the compilation of it. We are grateful to His Excellency. The Minister, the Secretary of Culture & Tourism, Govt. of India, have liberally sanctioned grants to materialize this project. We are thankful to them. We thank Prof. Sukomal Chaudhuri and Dr. Braj Mohan Pāndey 'Nalin', members of the editorial board of the Volume I, Part I of it. They inspired us for the compilation of this part also. Late Shyāmdeo Dwivedi corrected and rearranged the matter of a portion of it. We express high regards for him. Dr. S.P. Sinha, Registrar, Nava Nālandā Mahāvihāra has proffered valuable co-operation. We deem it fit to thank him. The manuscript of this part was prepared by Late Murāni Mohan Kumār Sinha, Dr. Chiranjeev Kumār Arya, Dr. Vishwajit Prasad Singh, Bhikshu Prajñāpāl and Shri Vinodānanda Jhā.
