Shri Jaina Conferenee Herald. in India, but also in Western Asia, in Northern Africa and in Southern Europe, is the most original of the versions handed down to us.
As this story has a striking parallel in the Old Testament, the following story, equally takin from the Holy Scriptures of the Jainas, occurs in the Christian New Testament. We read in the Uttaradhyaya-Sutra vii 14.
जहा य तिणि वणिया मूलं चित्तूण निग्गया। एगोत्थ लब्भइ लाभं एगो मूलेण आगओ ॥२४॥ एगो मूलंपि हारित्ता आगओ तत्थ वाणिओ।
ववहारे उवमा एसा एवं धम्मेवि जाणह ॥२५॥ These verses Hermann :Jacobi translates as fallows: 1
* Thre9 merchants set out on their travels, each with his capital; one of them gained there much, the second returned with his capital, and the third merchant came home after having lost his capital. This parable is takon from common life; learn ( to apply it) to the Law.''
The Dipika, published by Pandit Hiralal Hamsaraj, explains these two stanzas in these words:3
एकस्य वणिजस्त्रयः पुत्राः । तेन तेषां सहस्रं सहस्रं कार्षापणानां दत्तमुक्ताश्च । एतावता द्रव्येण व्यवहत्येयता कालेनैतव्यम्। तेऽपि तन्मूलं लात्वा स्वपुरान्निर्गताःपृथक्पृथक्पत्तनेषु स्थिताः। तत्रैको भोजनाच्छादनस्तोकमयो नि तमद्यमांसवेश्यादिव्यसनो युक्त्या व्यवहरन्धनं लाभं लेभे। द्वितीयस्तु मूलम् अक्षिपन् लाभं भोजनाच्छादनमाल्यभूषादिषु भुंक्ते न चात्यादरेण व्यवहरते । तृतीयस्तु न किंचिद्व्यवहरन् द्यूतमांसवेश्यागन्धमाल्यताम्बूलशरीरसत्क्रियाभिरल्पेनापि कालेन द्रव्यं क्षपितवान् । त्रयोऽपि यथावधिकाले स्वपुरमेताः। तत्र यच्छिन्नमूलः स पितृभ्यां गृहान्निष्कासितो जननिन्द्यः प्रेष्य एव जातः । द्वितीयो गृहव्यापारे नियुक्तो भक्तमात्रसंतुष्टोऽभुन्नप्रतिष्ठाहपुण्यकृत्यमुख्याधिकारी । इतरस्तु गृहसर्वेशो जातो राजमान्यश्च बन्धुयुग्मोदते॥ 1 Sacred Books of the East, vol, xlv, p. 29.
