forward their so called claims, and Pawapuri has been no exception. It is but bare truth to say that it was mainly due to the able initiative and indefatigable vigilance of the late Babu Govind Chand that they have been foiled in their obstinate endevour to gain a foot-hold in these sacred shrines. There has been a great deal of litigation over the matter and some suits are still pending. The present Manager Babu Dhannulal with his two brothers Babus Lakshmi Chand and Keshri Chand, is doing his utmost to keep up the prestige of the (Swetambaris and to defeat the attempt of the) rival sect to set up their alleged right of co-ownership over this sacred Tirtha and I hope he will be successfull in his praiseworthy efforts. A Visitors' book is kept in the Bhandar and it is a matter of congratulation to the whole Swetamber Community to find a high official of our Government, adding his quota of testimony to the efficient management of this, one of the most importent of our sacred places in the following extract taken from the same :
"I visited Pawapuri with Mrs. Maude this morning and we were very kindly shewn the various temples and dharamsalas which are in the charge of the Swetambaris, by the younger brother of the Manager. We visited first the temple in the lake which marks the spot where the last Tirthankar Mahavir was burnt after his death, From there we went to the temple which was erected on the spot where he died and thence to the further temple erected on the s attained to salvation This last temple is specially beautiful in its internal decoration and like all the Jain temples is kept with great care and in a state of perfect cleanliness and order. The tessellated marble floors of various shrines are beautifully kept and of themselves worth seeing We were also shown the Dharamsala attached to the temple which unlike many dharamsalas is clean and carefully looked after.
