Once upon a time Yashovijaya on the local sangh having insisted upon his staying for a monsoon stayed at Cambay. Meanwhile his Brahmin guru of Kashi being reduced to straitened condition inquired of the whereabouts of his old pupil Upadhyayji in Gujarat and came to Cambay. Upadhyayaji saw his guru at the upashraya when he was delivering his morning sermon. He rose up, received and offered his guru a high seat. When he inquired of his health, and happiness, he knew the purpose of his visit. Upadhyayaji then addressed to the whole sangh present "what I read to you, often contains some minute philosophical points which I try to explain in the best way possible. You praise me too much and think very high of'me. Let me frankly tell you that what I give to you, I have received from this my revered guru. He has taught me and brought me to this level. He is now a very poor old man. Sadhus like myself have nothing to pay to him, we can only preach, while it is the duty of the Shravakas to act according to the order”. Hearing this, the sanghpati (the head of the local congregation) said, "let us all give to the Brahmin panditji all the ornaments and everything we have with us just now”. All agreed, and collected about Rs. 36,000 and presented the same to the panditji. The Brahmin guru was pleased and went home wtih the greatest reward he could have from his pupil in return for knowledge he had imparted to him. Yashovijayaji had passed his early career which lasted from S.Y. 1680 to 1708, during which he studied Jain and other philosophies and was in the middle one in which he tried to show his erudition and extraordinary learning in refuting theories of other religions, and Jain Digambari and Schanakwasi sects.
