would study the above-referred work One day the Guru was teaching the said book to his eldest son, when Jasulal was sit ting beside him. The Guru interpreted a certain verse in a certain sense, when Jasulal mildly made a query as to whether the said verse be interpreted in the sense he gave out.
The Guru was too much pleased with the knowledge his pupil possessed and told him to sit with him, when he would teach him also the said granth. Jasulal humbly requested him the favour of lending the same for a day. The Guru handed over the same to him. Jasulal and Vinaylal resolved to commit to memory the whole granth which they did; The former committed to memory 700 verses, while the latter 500 verses in one day. .
While they completed the course of their study for 12 years, a great disputant came there to dispute with all the local pandits He had gone to 500 places and defeated all the learned of those places. He had therefore 500 flag-bearers with him, each flag indicating his success in one place. He offered a challenge that if he succeeded, the Benares City should provide him with onę flag and if he be defeated, he would give up all bis flags and diplomas in favour of the winner. All the paudits went. to him to see whether he was likely to be defeated, but they were disappointed in their expectations. Jasulal's Guru asked his pupil to accept the guantlet thrown by the disputant. Jasulal readily accepted the same, with these conditions that all the Brahmin pandits should follow him and in case he succeeded, he would be the prize-winner of 500 flags. The Guru and other pandits assented to these conditions and the same were transcribed on a copper-plate in the presence of the King. Ja-ulal and Vinaylal then adopter their original Jain ascetic dress, were followed by the Brahinin pandits, and went to dispute with the "radi". The dispute lasted for several days and ultimately
