________________ 23 This has been refuted by this author. We come accross this definition in various works such as Uddyotakara's Nayavartika. Dinnaga's Pramanasamuccaya and Siddha-sena "Divakar's Dvatrimsad dvatrimsika. But no author out of Uddyotakara and others, has pointed out the name of the work in which it occurs or the name of its author. But surely Vacaspatimtsra has said in his 'Nyayavartka-tatparyatika as under (and thereby indecated the name of the author): “ वार्षगण्यस्यापि लक्षणमयुक्तमित्याह ' श्रोत्रादिवृत्ति'रिति ।' a commentare on But even then he has not mentioned the work. In 'Yuktidipika', Sankhyasaptati we come accross the following line : - Stifterara ardor : " From this, too, the name of the work where this definition occurs is not know. Sastitantra But it is heard that there is a very ancient and voluminous work named as 'Sastitantra and composed by Varsaganya'.' But there is a difference of opinion amongst historians regarding the following : (1) Is Pancasikhacary the author of "Sastitantra, or Varsaganya ? (II) Are Pancasikhacarya and Varsaganya names of one and the same persons or those of different persons ? In the Bhasya on the 13th aphorism of the fourth 'pada' (foot ) of "Yogabhasya' there occur the following lines : १ समस्ततंत्रार्थविघटनं 'वार्षगणे तंत्रे 'तेन बहुधाकृतं तंत्र' 'कृन्नत्स्नस्य षष्टितंत्रस्य' 'पञ्चशिखेन मुनिना बहुधाकृतं तंत्रं षष्टितंत्राख्यं' 'अयं पंञ्चाशखःषष्टिसहस्त्रगाथात्मकं विपुलंतंत्र' On the basis of these sayings Tantra' is taken to mean 'Satstiantra. And since Pancasikha Acharaya belongs to the 'Vrsagana lineage, he is named 'Varsagana and as Varasganya' words having in the end the termination for 'lineage. This "Sastitantra' is designated as 'Yogasastra' too. The word Yoga is a synonym, too, of 'Sankhya', It is said in (Bhagavad) Gita 4 : "Hemini ge arm: Hafa a qocar: 1" For this very reason Vacaspatimisra too has made the following statement in Bhamati. " योगशास्त्रं व्युत्पादयता आह स्म भगवान् वार्षगण्य : " or by elucidating that Varsaganya says while profounding 'Yogasastra, there is no reason to believe Sastitantra is a work of Yogasastra, This Sankhya Acarya may have expounded entities of yoga. 'निराकरणार्थे अभ्युपगमसिद्धान्तसूचनार्थे For this very reason he may have used the 'pada' having the termination 'satr' meant for the present tense in," “ Er wuchipuar” Jain Education International 2010_04 For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.orgPage Navigation
