________________ 40 The Commentator In order to explain the great prawess, and essence of the scripture 'Nayacakra' which is full of deep meaning and philosophical thoughts and which is composed by Mallavadin Suri, Acarya Simhasura Gani Ksamas'ramana who is revered by the Jaina) regime, who is the erest jewel of logicians and who is proficient in all Systems of philosophy, has composed a commentary named as 'Nyayagamanusarini' The original scripture 'Nayacakra' has perished owing to the prowess of time, and it his remained untraced in spite of many a search. If this 'Nyaygamamsarini' commentary was not composed and if its manuscripts were not preserved in bhandaras (libraries), it would have been impossible to restore the original Nayacakra even in this form, and we wonld have learnt only the name 'Nayacakra' Simhasura Gani Ksamas'ramana has indeed much obliged not only scholars of the doctrine of non-absolutism but even the entire circle of learned persons, by composing this commentary. In spite of there being this commentary, the original 'Nayacakra' in nothing but unavailable. But we can form some idea about it by means of this commentary. If the commentator had expounded the text by re-producing its sentences in toto or by noting its parts, it would not have required any labour to restore it, and the entire text would have been completely restored in its original form and not as restored now. The commentator has however incorporated a little bit more than three fourths of the original work. This portion is restored by means of parts noted in this commentary, synomyms used for explanation, consistency of meanings inference and expositions. Consequently none should believe that Mallavadin suri may have composed his work just resembling this restoration, He has however composed a work far better and more deepsensed than this restora tion, This restorotion is merely a bird's eye view of it. It has not been possible to fill in gaps in the original work when the meaning of a sentence is pointed out by noting only its part Moreover, works of other systems of philosophy utilized by the 'Mulakara' are not to be had, Some of the available works such as 'Pramanasamaccaya' etc. are written in another language (other than sanskrit), so much difficulty is experienced in restoring the correspond. ing original portions, In such cases the text is prepared with the help of this commentary only. On going through this commentary of 'Nayacakra' sound scholarship of the comamentator does not remain unreveaved. There is not the slighest exaggeration in saying that this commentator is thoroughly expert in expounding and refuting non Jaina 'dars'anas' as he has deeply studied extensive works such as works of the six systems of philosophy, Pannini's grammary, Patanjal'a 'Mahabhasya' and 'Vakyapadiyy, He expoundas nature of heterodox systems of philosophy by taking into account view points by means of his extra-ordinary genius, then he refutes their doctrines by means of valid proofs and in the end make them consistent with 'Syadvada.' He is very proficient in the Jaina canon and Jaina philosophy. Hence we can very well realize extraordinary scholarship of this commentator. In spite of his such proficienty in his own 'darsana' and those of others, there is not a bit of self importance and desire for glory in this Ksamas ramana.
