________________ 42 This Sunaga Acary is posterior to Katyayana. Kaiyata, the author of 'mahabhasyapradipa has said : 'कात्यायनाभिप्रायमेव प्रदर्शयितुं सौनागैरतिविस्तरेण पठितमित्यर्थः' Saunaga” has composed a 'vartika' on 'Astadhyayi' of Panini. Patanjali writes : are atat: a SS gas' Further as regards the aphorism HET' Patanjali weile denying 'ca' has said ;__'एवं हि सौनागा : पठन्ति चोऽनर्थकोऽधिकारादेङ : etc. eu These evidences prove that Saunaga is anterior to Patanjali and posterior to Katyayana. From ihe following sentence it appears that Acarya Bhagurl has composed some grammatical work ; aiguafa12169aat: This commentator (Simhasuri ) while describing divisions of time such as susama susama etc. as under has said in his commentary on the second spoke that grass is four fingers in measure: 'सुषमसुषमायां सुषमायां सुषमदुःषमायां चात्रैव...चतुरडुलहरिततृणा:' This description is not to be seen in any available Svetambar works except this commentary But it is found as under in Tiloyapannati composed by Yativrsabha, a Digambara Acarya : a RATN To Gigi Giet II RPRIL The date of this Yativrsabda Acarya is said to be Saka Samvat 380 (515 V.S.), and that of the composition of Tiloyayapnnatti' as about Saka Samvat 405. Jugalkishor Mukhtar says that the date of 'Tiloyapannati' is anterior to that of Svetambara works of Devarddhi Gani and that of Avasyaka-niryukti etc. But this clearly shows nothing else but his partiality, Svetambara 'agamas are not composed by Devarddhi Gani, but they have been redacted by him. His date is at present believed to be Vira Samvat 980 (510 V.S.) whereas that of Yativrsabha Acarya, 515 V.S, 'Niryuktis' are composed for earlier than this. This is what is stated by us while discussing the date of the author of 'Nayacacra'. In spite of this, to say that the basis for mentioning grass to be four fingers in measure, is nothing else but 'Tiloyapanoatti, deserves investigation. Good many topic whice are available today, are not to be found in extant 'agamas. What proof is there that such a thing may not have occurred in this case ? In 'Samaya-prabhrta of Kundakunda Acarya, the following verse occurs while dealing with the topic of Kartr-karman': “ जीवपरिणाम हेउं कम्मत्तं पुग्गला परिणमंति। पुग्गलकम्माणिमित्त, तहेव जीवोवि परिणमइ ॥१२॥ 1. Vide ANEKANT (Vo 1, 2, 2.) See Haltera att gragre o fericit" P. 56 2. See Page 455. 3. Vide "Anekanta" (Vol. II, P. 521.) 4. In the introduotion of "Prevacanapariksa” published from Bombay in A. D. 1935 is said to be the beginning of the Christian era. Jain Education International 2010_04 For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.orgPage Navigation
